It's worth it compared to using Google maps. Once you learn their limitations and get to understand how they work, they make your job a lot easier. Third party sellers on Amazon can suck. Good that they allow you to return it locally. Hopefully you get a refund immediately.

Doesn't the unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter have a fuse? Unscrew the silver ring near the end and check the fuse.
MAKE SURE NOT TO LOSE THE SMALL METAL PIECES

You can plug the 740 into a USB power jack, while it is off, charge the battery for a couple of hours and then turn it on after it has charged for a while. If it powers up after a lengthy USB charge, your problem is likely just a blown fuse or bad 12v charger.

I baby my 740, keep it cool, don't overcharge it, unplug power and turn it off when I am not using it, put a sunshade over it to protect from the sun etc. I have no real complaints. BUT if and when I breaks I'll probably but a Garmin 780. They seem to be more reliable. I would not spend the extra money to get a tablet GPS all in one device. They are expensive and less durable, IMO.

Now that you have returned the unit, consider a different brand. Both Garmin and TomTom have truck specific products that work better.

Amazon has alot of fraudelent sellers. Its important to look as the seller before buying. If it came from rand mcnally itself ur chances of buying a defective product off amazon is much reduced compared to some 3rd party.

My old rand mcnally was better than the newer models of rand mcnally. No lag. Touch screen worked better. It had better route finding and faster. It was to the point and on point no added features that add nuisances. For example newer rand mcnally added feature that autozooms while using it. U cant turn it off. Garmin atleast lets u turn it off. My old rand mcnally fully let u be in control no autozoom nonsense that ruins ur ability to use the over view map if and when u need to.
