Starting work soon as a apprentice truck mechanic and was wondering if there were any tips I should know/ do on the first day. I have a bit of knowledge about vehicles from a short course I took a couple of months back and developed a big interest in this career path
Any advice would help on little pointers to make sure I can be my best.
Thanks

Biggest thing is listening. You may have a bit of knowledge under your belt but guys who've been doing this for years have a great deal more. Listen and ask questions if you don't understand. There is NEVER a dumb question.
Clean up after yourself. This means sweep the floor, clean off your work benches, empty trash etc. Nobody wants to trust a guy with their iron if they can't be bothered to keep their work area tidy.
Be on the shop floor (or wherever the daily toolbox meeting is) and ready to work 5 minutes before start time.
If you're waiting for your next job, don't be afraid to pick up a broom and tidy up. Or go offer a co-worker some assistance if management is ok with it.
Don't rush. It takes what it takes. Mistakes happen quick when you rush.
Write quality service reports. If you don't explain it, the shop can't charge for it. Just as an example: I had to do a head and head gasket not long ago. Quoted at 12 hours. I took 14. I had photos taken showing the engine was filthy and required a wash. Then I had 2 seized injectors that had to be removed from the old head. A well-written service report got us paid for the extra 2 hours.Shawn2130, QUALITYTRUCK, Chubby Fly and 6 others Thank this. -

most of all, don't just stand around, or keep going for the coffee machine. keep busy, offer to help, and as said...LISTEN to what another tech says.....of course, if he says that the farm next door has a horny goat.....don't bend over..???? -
Great advice and I will say I do understand that cleaning and not standing around and taking initiative is a MUST but maybe some insight of what the first day could be like? I’ve being very lucky to have landed a job at scania and feel they will look after me quite well.

I can't speak for Australia but the first day at any job I've had consisted of company orientations, safety videos, tax/benefit/pension paperwork etc. Then a walk around tour of the shop etc. Usually didn't get on the shop floor until the next day.
Being new to the company as well as to the trade they will probably put you to work with an experienced mechanic for a while. Maybe not working side by side but at least have them nearby to mentor you.Shawn2130 and Tosaveyagang Thank this. -
Just don't let yourself get overwhelmed. Experience comes with time. I've been at this job over a decade and its only been in the last year or so that I've felt truely confident and competent in my abilities.
Shawn2130, Tosaveyagang and buddyd157 Thank this. -
Don't be afraid to say "I don't know how to do that" or "I've never done that before" - but "I want to try", "I want to learn". Too many apprentices/helpers want the boss to think they can do anything and know everything. You will get more respect being honest about your skills and knowledge.
