    Again, I say.

Of course some kids don't listen, or have to learn the hard way. That is why the firearm should always be secured. There are gun safes available that will allow quick access. Punch a 4 digit code and your in. If you are not there to keep your child away from the firearm, it should be secure.
Don't just put it on the top shelf of the closet. Or, on top of the refrigerator. Kids are more observant that you may think. Once they know there may be something in a particular location, they'll go to extremes to get it down. Even out of their mothers purse.

Don't let the death of your child, or their friend, change you mind about securing a firearm.

I will say that when we had young children we kept my husband's duty pistol and off duty pistols locked up.

There are good points to both sides of the question on whether to keep weapons locked up or not. We looked at the age factor of our child. At fourteen we felt he was old enough to have maturity.

I'll say though that I have a bit of a problem with the idea that you wake from a dream and go get the gun down then blow your sister away. That isn't a child who accidently got ahold of a gun that was left out. That's just.......well I think there might be more to the story but that's just my opinion.

    4 digit code?

In the middle of the night you're going to be coherent enough to get your weapon out?

Meanwhile, I've got a double tap in the intruder's chest.

The only time my guns are locked up is when I am not at home. If I am home they are where I can get my hands on them in a matter of seconds.

If you can't wake up fast enough to unsecure your gun, I doubt your aim would be all that great as well.

Dodge City wasn't even like Dodge City as glorified in the dime store novels about the old west.
