I am currently a CDL school student and I figured maybe I could get ahead of the game by checking out possible opportunities before I graduate. In spite of the "love" many of the truckers here have for Werner I am currently considering them as a possible employer. Is this a good decision and if not why not? All opinions are welcome but I would appreciate it if they do not turn into rants. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
Is Werner a good place for newbies?

I know a couple of guys that started with Werner and stayed for a couple of years and they seemed to do ok. I know there is good and bad with every company, nobody is perfect.
Read the posts here about Werner and the other companies that most consider a "starter" for newbies, ask lots of questions of other drivers that you know, post questions here and just keep on reading/asking until you find a place that works for you.
Trucking is difficult to adjust to, its best to start off with a company that YOU feel comfortable with. -
In my experience it has been OK. I work a dedicated account and have since I have been solo. I think a lot of it has to do with what you expect in terms of money and time at home. Just starting out if you are regional or otr I would not look to make a lot of money. I do not have first hand experience in either so I could be wrong. I base this on what I have been told by drivers regional and otr drivers that come in to help on the account I work.
Jobs are tough everywhere right now, but I am sure you know that. You may make more than you would at some other jobs, but you will work long hours and not see home as much to do it. You will also have a fairly long period of time training in which you will not make much at all.
I know nothing of the area you are in and what they may be hiring for in your area. I would try to find out if there are any dedicated accounts in your area as I feel you will make more money and see home more if you can get on one. Also look at other companies that may be hiring and try to talk to drivers you see in your area and see what they have to say.
Driving can be a big change in your lifestyle and it does not work for everybody. I am still unsure if I really like it that much or not, but I need a job to pay bills and right now it works for me.
As far as Werner being a good decision, that could go either way. I looked at several companies that were hiring in my area before I made my choice. I talked to them, their drivers, recruiters and looked up stuff online for all of them first. Since I started I have talked to drivers for some of the other companies I considered and from what I have heard I would say I made the right choice.
There has been many times I have wanted to leave, but as I said I need a job to pay bills and have more sense than to just quit because they piss me off.newbie67 Thanks this. -
I talked to a Werner recruiter yesterday and I was fairly happy with what I heard but I am just new enough to be easily impressed. I got a pre-hire from them today which is certainly more than I have gotten from anybody else but I still have 4 1/2 weeks of school left so I am sure there will be more opportunities and info coming my way. As far as making money, at this point I do not expect to get rich but as long as I can pay my bills and feel reasonably sure that there is not a knife waiting to stab me in the back I am open to ALMOST anything. Thanks for taking the time to post your info and let me know how things go for you, who knows maybe I'll be seeing you in a Werner truck of my own. Happy trails and stay safe out there!
kickin chicken Thanks this.
