Hello Everyone, Let me start off by saying, That Ive been reading alot of threads lately, About Primes C D L, training program, And how good it is. Everyone has there own opinion in this world. So let me tell you about mine. I started my trucking experience , Back in July of 1988. I went to a school, To get my C D L. It was a six weeks program. I got a Pell Grant to pay for it. After Graduating , I started my driving career over the road. The company I drove for, Had a Three day orintation, Then I went out for six weeks with my first trainer, Then I had six more weeks with my second trainer. Then I finally got my own truck. That was the standard practice back then , With the trucing companys , That would hire student drivers, I drove for about one year over the road, Then I decided that it wasent worth it, Cause I was missing out, On seeing my two small childrn growing up. One time I was gone for about six weeks, When I finally got home, My year half little boy dident remember me , For about the first day , I was home. So i came off the road, And took a differnt occupation job. I was there for 13 years. Then after 911, The airline industry took a nose dive, And I got laidoff, During the 13 years , I was off the road, Istill had that itch , To want to drive again. I kept my license untill the , Federal Governmemt, Did away with the Chafullers license, And replaced it with the , Now current C D L. License. So at the time , Since I wasent driving for a living, I had to give up my Classs A License, And go back to a regular license, After about four years , I decided to get go get my , C D L. License, So iI paid my 250 .00 dollars, And rented a tractor trailer, And took the test again. But no company would hire me, Because i was off the road to long. So I decided to go back , To Truck Driving School again. This time i paid for it with my own money. It was about 2700.00 dollars. This school course was a six week long. After graduation, I took a job with a another over the road company, There orientation was two weeks long, And then tou had to go out with a trainer for six weeks, So I did it again. So now here we are, 2009, Out of the two schools , I went to , I would have to say, The second one , Was more in detail. We covered alot of topics , In the classroom. Wspent alot of time on driving course, And backing course, We did pull loaded trailers, We all so did night driving to.We all so drove on the highways, We drove in the citys, We drove in the indusrtial parks, So in short terms, All I am saying is that there are some really good schools out there, Besides Prime. Please dont take me wrong on this, Im not trying to say that ,Prime dont have a good program. Im just saying ,That there are choices out there, In closing I would just like to remind everyone, That life is all about choices, Thanks Familyman.:biggrin_25511:

I dont disagree with you at all... Ive stated before that I am sure there are some good schools out there.

I was recently frustrated by a trainee who graduated from what I take was a bad school.

no no no... no offense taken at all.

I was a little frustrated this past week over my trainee... First, because he quit because of the pressure from home. Second, his level of skill having graduated from a truck driving school.

Like you, I was just trying to offer up some information and invoke some thought in these individuals who are looking to be truck drivers.

Just like trucking companies, no two schools or training programs are alike. Reasearch and hard decision making is required. Its not easy sorting through the BS out there.

Last thing, just because an individual has resigned himself to the sacrifices that have to be made to get into trucking, doesnt mean his family has... or even understands the demands.

U2 and I are both Prime employees. I'd say that Prime (and U2 probably agrees with me) that Prime is one of the best large trucking companies out here. Great place to train. As with all things, experiences vary, and not everyone will agree with us.

I get a load up to the NE, bounce around a few days on short loads up there (usually back and forth between lower NE and New England via NYC) then get a load out. I ran across a couple of guys who were pulling loads into NYC and nothing else as well - works if ya know da' City!

6.5 mpg isn't that difficult. Slow down, stay off the throttle, ballance your loads, progressive shifting, take your time slowing down and definitely never run underinflated tires. If you have trouble getting there, they'll put you back with a trainer for awhile until you get your game.

Oh yeah... it would be worth it in my opinion. Yours may vary - I can't say.

We are running Freightliners (Centuries and Cascadias) and Pete 387s mostly. There are some T660s, but we aren't getting any more.

Can't say what inside da' City is like, but I get Newark area, Philly, Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee. Isn't that bad, but you need to do your homework. Know ingress/egress routes, check on low bridges up front. Take your time, and have something like mapquest via an aircard available for consultation when things get funky.

IMO, Prime treats us very well as drivers. When we bought TRL, the bullet-proof glass and combination lock doors were the first things to go. For the most part they aren't cheap on maintenance, listen to your concerns, safety is more than a word, and I am allowed to decide when the weather is bad enough that it is unsafe to be on the road.

A lot of that depends on your FM too - but (as I am told) bad FMs don't last long at Prime - probably long enough to make you wish you had someone else though. I'm sure that can be said about any company though - my experience has been great.
