KEARNEY - Autopsies were being done today in Lincoln on the bodies of two relatives who died in a head-on crash Thursday near Gibbon.
David "Smokey" McLeod, 68, of Kearney, and his daughter-in-law Jami McLeod, 43, Bremerton, Wash., died after the car they were riding in collided with a semitrailer truck driven by David Crouch, 36, of LaVista.
The crash happened about 12:45 p.m. on I-80 two miles east of the Minden Interchange.
Capt. Chris Kolb of the Nebraska State Patrol in Grand Island said Crouch was driving west on I-80 when he lost control of the 2009 International semi owned by Crete Carrier Corp. of Lincoln. Crouch drove through the median and hit McLeod's eastbound car.
After the impact, both vehicle went into the south ditch where the semi tipped onto its side. A portion of the semi and trailer caught fire, but Crouch escaped with minor injuries. He was transported to Kearney's Good Samaritan Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
David McLeod was ejected from the car. Jami McLeod was trapped. Kolb said it isn't known if the two were restrained. Crouch was restrained.
At press time the patrol was trying to determine why Crouch crossed the median. The crash remains under investigation by the State Patrol and the Buffalo County Attorney's Office.Last edited by a moderator: Aug 14, 2009
