Try to get hazmat when you can. Not all companies require it, but it's good to have. I kept mine current and it kept me from having to lay over in some truck stop waiting for a non-hazmat load. Was in Ohio and unloaded; only load available was paint going to Los Angeles. Need hazmat for paint load, so I grabbed it and headed for California.
125 drivers at that reefer outfit and I was the only one with hazmat endorsement. When I went to work there; the other drivers informed me how stupid I was to waste money on hazmat endorsement. I just smiled and said, " Uhhh...ok."
Not braggin', but I was the top earner there and having that endorsement was a big part of it, even though I was way, way down on the seniority list.
