Along these lines I was looking at a 379 someone was offering pre elog for my cousin. "Excellent condition."

Excellent condition equated to not even running and need some drive axle work.

Overhaul on a Cat is 20k with Interstate Mcbee parts, which gets you all new parts, not used like you get from Cat, and that was out of frame with a new head and crank work. I was figuring the 40k was with a fairly recent overhaul, if there's 250k on an overhaul there's no reason you shouldn't be able to put 100k a year on that for 5 or 6 years and not have to put anything else in it other than regular maintenance. What's it cost to sit everytime there's an issue with the emissions on that new truck? I highly doubt anybody's getting 8 with a new w9, pulling anything, maybe 7 on good days.

    I pull open decks but:
    1. 1986 model year 359EXHD flat top, 3406B, 15 speed OD, 3.90 gets 6.2 USmpg on summer fuel at 60-62 mph . Weights are 30,000 to 85,000. Paid $25,000 USD for the truck in 2014. Truck is worth probably $50,000 today

    2. 1998 model year T800 tall bunk but without the roof fairing, M11, 13 speed, 4.33 gets 7.0 USmpg on summer fuel at 60-62 mph weights are 30,000 to 85,000. Paid $12,000 USD for the truck in 2007. 250k on the inframe done here in our shop.....$3000 for the Cummins rebuild kit not including the cylinder head that was replaced earlier, $2,000 labor. Truck is worth probably $30,000 today

    3. 2008 model year T660, ISX, 13 speed, 3.70 gets 5.5 USmpg on summer fuel at 70+ mph weights are 30,000- 85,000. Paid $80,000 USD for the truck in 2007. Worth probably $10,000 today you almost can't give a DPF truck away.

Even without mentioning the emission related expenses of the 2008 that exceed $50,000, I'll leave it to the loan officers and aerodynamics experts to calculate which has been the better deal.

Have you seen what they're asking for a late 90s or early 2000s w9 with a rebuilt Cat, 18 speed, and rears, anywhere from 60k to 90k. Have you seen what they want for a 2015 with 600k miles and an ISX, the same price range and nothing new or rebuilt.

About 6 months ago a farmer out here bought a used 2015 Pete 389 trade in from Rush. ISX with 18 speed with maybe 350,000 on it. Really excellent shape for $20,000 cash. Was around $150,000 new down to $20,000 in 4-1/2 years.

I just bought a 14' Cascadia, DD15 505 HP,double bunk, Thermoking APU Evolution, 10 speed, inverter, new DPF, disk brakes. all maintenance records, 372K miles / 7.8 MPG lifetime.

    $43,750 out the door.

    $0 down and 8.75% interest.

So I only need to work it for 16 years to catch up with the mileage of the mighty CAT trucks.

I actually bought it in October, hasn't turned a mile yet, except to go to my drop yard, and yesterday for Landstar Inspection.

Ir ain't about the cat. An n14 or series 60 is just as good, if not preferable. It's about not having egr/dpf/def and all the costs, headaches and downtime associated with them. Give me a 12.7 any day of the week and twice on sunday . 7+ mpg, inexpensive parts and so simple I have literally rebuilt them over a weekend.
