    You will notice Cat did upgrade the piston skirts for that reason. Broken rings. Piston likes to wiggle on wristpin with factory skirt design. New inframe kit will come with diffrnt lookin pistons.

    When were they updated? Reason I ask is the kit I purchased came packed, with the piston loaded inside the new liner. All I had to do was install the outer o-rings on the liner.

    They were updated in mid to late 2011, the updated pistons have a micro alloy that incorporates a lower land support. The cyl pack part numbers do not change, but there is a visual difference like the other poster says. The updated pistons have the same weight and balance as the older style so you do not have to change all 6. But there is a heavier piston available for the SDP 550 hp and below 18:1 comp ratio, this part number is 10R-9611 cyl pack / 325-9492 piston part number and is heavier in weight than the 356-4787 piston body and can not be mixed.

    Caution needs to be taken as the 10R-2151 / 232-6557 use a different retainer part number to the rest.

    Seems to be pretty common in all acerts that are under high load conditions a good percentage of there life.
