Curious how it all worked out for the OP. That’s one thing that makes it hard in trucking is for young people to get started. I think our industry would be far better off if people could make a career out of it early in life vs having to go fail at something else and trucking be what you fall back on.

If you were to make a list of what factors make for the most expensive commercial insurance, you've hit them all.

    1. California Resident
    2. New Owner Operator
    3. 21 years old with little experience driving commercial

"If" you can find insurance at all, expect it to cost $20,000 to $30,000 per year. Did I say "if" you can find it at any price? Take other's advice here. Drive for at least a couple more years before even considering becoming an O/O. After you pay overhead, you won't have enough money left to buy a six pack of beer as an O/O. Regardless of how good you believe you are at driving, you need more experience. Drivers who get ####y about their abilities generally wind up having an accident, and insurance companies know this.

It’s sad the insurance company wouldn’t let you drive with your old man. Team then get your truck. That’s what I did with my pops. A year in he asked insurance company and they gave the green light. Surprisingly that was dealing with NYC every week. I was 22 when they let me fly solo. October 3rd picking up in Baltimore going to Mobile.

Looking back, the insurance company took a gamble and worked in their favor. I could see how they would not want to insure anyone of any age without experience. Way too much can go wrong (still can even if you drove 80 years) and it gets worse each year.

Hopefully you’re still trucking and don’t have too many problems.
