I got a load picking up on Friday from Independence OR (near Salem), going to Vegas and beyond.
Anyone got any advice on which route across the Cascades is truck legal and passable this time of year? 58, perhaps? 22 is a no go, it's closed until Feb 24th according to Google. I could also go to Cali and then do CA 89 and CA 44 to Susanville...
What would you guys do? I really want to do the 395/Reno shortcut, really dont feel like looping all the way down on I-5 and I-15 through SoCal
Salem OR to Las Vegas NV winter route?

I want to go through Reno. I just need to find a way to get across the mountains between Reno and Oregon. -
Hwy 22 is closed because of a tanker overturned. Hazmat cleanup said to last a couple more days. Your are likely to fight the weather going that way during winter conditions. Good luck

depends on the weather when you get there.

If the weather looks good I would go I-5 south to Mount Shasta and the 89 to 44 to Susanville to 395. 89 from Mount Shasta is small road. Kinda fun to see all the trees. Their is a chain up hill back their. I would not want to get back their and have to chain up.
You can go 84 to Twin Falls ID and 93 down to Las Vegas. Google maps say that 130 miles longer but then you have to get up over cabage and Pay more for running all the miles in a OregonFlat Earth Trucker, 51.50 and PermanentTourist Thank this. -
Check all of the routes mentioned. Also instead of 93 you could go all the way down to 95s in Ontario and take it all the way to Vegas. I use the weather underground app. You can get hour by hour forecasts for each route once you learn how to use it.

They're not expecting any rain or snow for at least the next 3 days in OR and WA. I'd take the fastest summer route which is I-5 south to 58 over to 97/139 to Reno, and 95 south to Vegas. If you take 58 mid day, you're not likely to see any ice or frosty roads over the summit. I drove from Seattle to Medford today and it was sunny and beautiful. In the 50's and trees are blooming.
