    Read somewhere one time that the heavy lifting, dirty work, manual labor on that subway construction project was done mostly by blacks and Irish immigrants.

    i would not doubt that. the immigrants were coming to America at such a time, that laborers were needed, and anyone that wanted to work, found jobs.
