According to the lawyer at this link, if convicted of having a radar or lidar in a commercial motor vehicle it carries 5 CSA/CVSA severity points plus any multiplier. 5 points is a bigger deal than a random equipment out of service.
Why pay $300 to have the box that can get you a couple hundred dollar ticket, plus speeding ticket, plus 5 points? Volunteering for one ticket/fine is bad enough, but multiple tickets/fines just to go 3 mph faster than you can speed without it?
‘I can’t drive 55!’ Radar Detectors? Legal or not?

IF.... and ... INJolliRoger and Feedman Thank this. -
Also, a little bird once told me that laser can easily be jammed by running a high-powered fog light with a filter that only allows infrared light to pass through. I don't know how true that is, but I figured I'd mention it anyway. -

The companies that sell radar guns to the cops also sell the tuning forks to calibrate those radar guns. Look at how much work, time, and money is being wasted trying to feel better about driving what 3 MPH faster than the 5 MPH the cop will allow? Maybe instead of pretending you are going to drive 11 hours every day doing 3 mph faster than you can get away with by just reading the speed limit signs it would make more sense to work for someone that pays half a cent more per mile or doesn't routinely schedule you to deliver in 95% of the driving time between shipper and receiver? I know what it's like to drive every day wth the idea that anything that slows you down for 5 seconds will mean you will be late and then broke. All that does is jack up your blood pressure or wreck your health and the boss doesn't give a carp if you have a heart attack or stroke behind the wheel or not. Radar detectors are the "nutritional supplements" of the electronics world. A gullible audience willing to buy anything if some marketing guru just figures out the correct string of made up words to sell them.
Laser guns use very tiny receiver lenses because the laser is so coherent. The chances of some fog light hitting the laser gun "eye" is pretty dang remote, like throwing a bunch of keys at a lock will sometimes unlock it. It's not impossible, just so remote as to never work in a lifetime. -

but the RD is handy for the podunk towns that ALWAYS have a cop sitting all day and all night in their speed trap dialing for dollars .
Oh you didn’t notice the speed limit dropped from 55 to 25 in one sign ?
they do it that way on purpose .
Odd how the greedy money hungry lazy cops always sit running for radar , but when an active shooter is in a school they are cowards and stay outside for an hour .
If they can move money from your pocket to theirs , they are super brave .
If someone is shooting you a school, they cower behind the car a half mile away . -
Nashville cops didn't wait 74 minutes outside of the school where an active shooter was murdering kids. If your PD is run by the wrong people and your city and state tolerate that, blame the voters. There is a reason why certain places in the world have successful societies and others have almost permanently failed societies. Make choices like the consequences are important.downplay Thanks this. -

It's funny how events in life can be reflected in these forums. Last night a friend came by to check on me. He took me on a quick trip to get some items I needed. Before he left he told me about his speeding ticket he got in New Mexico about a week ago. Down on I-10 about halfway between Lordsburg and Deming. Was charged with going 14 over. He said his bird dog never went off. It was about 3 in the morning and all of a sudden he saw the flashing lights behind him. I told him I guessed you got lasered. He said he did not think so but he would look at the ticket later. I then added I doubt it would have really mattered if the RD had gone off in that setting. By the time it went off the cop has measured your speed and is coming for you! I don't know because it has been over a decade since I was last in NM. I don't know what NM uses these days. I have heard they do use Lidar as well as clocking.
