‘I can’t drive 55!’ Radar Detectors? Legal or not?

In CA stay in the right lane ( or 2 ) and dont be weaving in and out. You can run 62-65 easy with no problems.

 

I see police helicopters over the freeways regularly, think they are mostly looking for illegal street racers though. But they don’t need radar, they just pick out a bridge or whatever and they know it’ll take 23 seconds for a car to make one end to the other going the legal posted speed of 60 and if they time someone making it in 16 seconds they radio to the ground unit to pull over the fast and furious looking green car with the giant spoiler on the back. There have been some bad wrecks with street racing and I’m noticing cops cracking down.

I personally don’t like using radar detectors, I prefer using my own situational awareness skills the old school way.

 

‘Waze’ is probably more effective at pinpointing where the cops are sitting…..
I turn it on when driving on I-77 in VA near Fancy Gap and on US 35 in Ohio in the 60mph zone…
I just like to know where they are… I’m not much of an excessive speeder….
In California, in the more remote areas I try to keep around 62… in the ‘basin’ I’ll just do what the flow is doing….

 

Yeah that’s probably better than a radar detector.

 

I use google maps. And it has the same thing and prob more used.

 

Nobody gets out of a speeding ticket by "going the speed of the flow." It's the very first thing every speeder tells the cop that is giving them a ticket.
Being comfortable with what you are doing is very very different than obeying the laws and regulations.

 

Yes, they've had those for a while. I assume they pick up the signal generated by the oscillator inside your radar detector.

I have a top of the line v1 still in my closet from several years ago, all it gets now is blind spot/ adaptive cruise radar, that’s why it’s in my closet

Never used a "radar detector", at all.
I remember when OHIO was 55. I rarely did 55, usually 58-60 and I was passed by other 40 ton vehicles.
When I did go into Cali4neeyah, I rarely ran under 60, except when TRAFFIC dictated speed slowdown. I got passed, as Bobtail and with Trailer by numerous CHP in the So. Cal. Basin, as well on I-15 to Barstool and above as well I-40 E, and I-40W extension.
I-10 wasn't 55 to me till I got near banning coop.

A long Train of Trailers driving 55 and under, so the HAMMER LANE was used to Giddy-Up-GO.
