Well the Japanese have 45 days to file a formal extradition request from the day the guy was taken into custody,so the deadline is early July, which means about 2 1/2 weeks to go give or take.

As much as I'd like to keep our relationship friendly with Japan, I'd be more than happy to have that particular file fall off the president's desk.

"Sorry, president Abe. The time limit has been exceeded. I was a little busy with the virus, the economy, the rioting, the NFL, G5 cell towers, sunspots and the election. It must have slipped through the schedule. So sorry."

Update: Someone in Japan Inc. must’ve been twisting some arms here, because the courts OK’d the extradition!
The ex-Green Beret was extradited to Japan!
Ex-Green Beret and His Son, Accused of Helping Nissan Boss Escape, Extradited to Japan

Former Green Beret accuses US of ‘betrayal’ for OK’ing extradition to Japan in smuggling case
Something like this could possibly come back to bite our country in the ***!

Key to this would be the fact Ghosn isn't American. US authorities are not real keen on the idea that Americans violate ally's laws willy-nilly. Whether the Japanese prosecution of Ghosn is legitimate or not (and it is VERY questionable), is not relevant to the fact the Taylors inserted themselves into the process in a very unseemly manner. They no doubt thought they were untouchable... Surprise!

They're no Arthur D. "Bull" Simons.
