Out of curiosity, why only 1099 positions?

With a W-2 form position, the employer, along with the employee, pays into Social Security. Also, the employer pays into workman's compensation & unemployment compensation, both of which can be quite helpful if ever needed.

Chances are, if one is a W-2 employee, one will be offered health and / or dental insurance, along with matching contributions to a 401 K plan.
