I'm checking out http://freightfinder.com/database/SearchQuick.cfm on freight finder, and when I click Search Loads, and then I click on a company's name, I see that they are offering $0.00 for a rate??!! What's going on here? They want me to haul this load for free?

No, you have to call and negotiate the rate.

I tried them a long time ago, I could not find any freight within 500 miles of Virginia.
    Have they gotten any better?

If you have a smartphone download 123Loadboard and Truckloads (by Trucker's Path). 123Loadboard gives you the average $/mile for the lane, but you need to subscribe for unlimited use. I use it to search about 10 loads a day when needed. I like Truckloads for easier use.
