Im hearing about how Automatics seem to be winning over the Trucking majority...You how they are a breeze to use on hills and traffic and gaining favor in inclement weather....but I never really hear about how they are when starting from a complete stop..
With all things equal. 2 trucks with same engine; Same truck model, etc and both hauling 40k lbs but one is an automatic and the other is say a 10 speed manual.
Which gets you from 0 to 60 faster?
I would reckon the manual would get there quicker; right!? Due to the automatic making the "Fuel-Saving" shifts sooner in the RPM range whereas you can hold the gear longer in a manual before shifting for more torque, Yes..No?
I don't want to drive Automatics. I like my manual.. I don't mind shifting in traffic and such...Keeps the mind sharp... What else am I gonna do, anyway.... (Still got to sit in the seat behind the wheel anyhow)
I just want a win in the win column for manuals for a change. LoL.

The win win, is simple. Its what i prefer. That's it. 0 to 60? Takes me exactly the same amount of time regardless. I dont make a habit of standing starts weighing 60k plus. Torque will remove your drive shaft before you can brag about it.....

The bean counters at the main office really aren't concerned with take-off performance if it's going to come at the expense of increased fuel burn. Thus, we can begin to see why autos are becoming the norm for those with mid and large fleets and full of drivers who don't give a dam about fuel costs and conservation.
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Autos seem faster thru the low side of the tranny.......
But who cares I just let them go.... -
YOur game have a big fault
EAton autoshift is junk
IF it is setup as eco its shift years not times
I-shift from volvo is only with a volvo engine arrivalHappyfeet and LoneCowboy Thank this. -
What's the race? If one is faster than the other I'm sure it is a minimal difference... I prefer my manual just because I'm used to it. I'm sure automatics are great. I just don't want one. If I was hiring someone who cared which truck gets to 60 faster, I would buy them an automatic and force it onto fuel economy mode.
KillingTime, STexan, Ruthless and 2 others Thank this. -

I forget the exact figures for a 500 Detroit and another 550 detroit that was unlimited. I do remember it took about 35 seconds to 60 and then 2 minutes to 120 and another 8 to 132 if it's level.
Keep in mind the more speed you demand a truck to go, you double every 10 mph the required power to achieve that speed and double again and again until it's exponetial squared. There are tractors that weight 8 ton and can do 110 at the finish line when it's unlimited and you only use three gears out of 9 total allowing half the array of clutch plates to burn off.
I do have one regret. I have never tasted say a Main Battle Tank Engine cranking 1200 to 1500 horse. with so much torque that God has seen fit to make sure the earth is leashed to the sun when we bust em out to go to war. -
Dude, its not a race car.
