Nope, control has nothing to do with it. Its cost mitigation. Simpler trucks equal cheaper drivers. That simple.

Today's trucks cost more.no it's controll.they low lowered the standards to fill the seats so now they got to control the new Kids on the Block. Most of the kids driving today would have never been hired 20 years ago

There is a difference between operating cost and overhead. A lease truck doesn't cost all that much no matter the tech. You can look for black helicopters all ya want. They arent there. Cameras may look like control to a driver, but it looks like reducing liability due to unqualified drivers (cost) to the company.

I'm not seeing it that way my brother. The ELD is all about control nothing to do with safety. The speed limiters is all about control. The satellite system is all about control. We never had the problems delivering Freight that we have now. Back 1977 I was look at a brand-new cab over 47,000. Similar truck today Is about 120 Grand. Then add in all the control stuff it's at least 40 k more. All the control factors they have on the truck are absolutely ridiculous.

But I will admit I sure do like the Eld the cruise control and the automatic transmission. That's forward-looking radar it's pretty nice when it works properly but that's going out pretty much about once a month.

Now they lowered the standards for hiring drivers because the government stepped in and is subsidizing so much of this. If it wasn't for the government helping out, half the people driving today would not be on the street

@Damaged_Goods you have received quite a few replies noting that you should NOT be concerned with how quickly you can get from 0 to 60. There are a few really good reasons for that.

First, fuel economy. I rarely get my foot to the floor with my ungoverned truck. I normally give it about 50% throttle when accelerating. Take your time getting up to speed. I think companies that have governed trucks encourage full throttle behavior and it's a bad habit.

Second is all about safety. It's said that driving in slick conditions will quickly expose bad driving. Don't end up jackknifed because you didn't learn the finer points of keeping boost below 50%. Learn to drive with less throttle, especially when accelerating.

Third, engine and drive train health. If you make a habit of flooring it to accelerate you put strain on expensive components that don't need to be there. Another forum member said if hiring a driver with a need to get from 0 to 60 as fast as possible he would put you in an auto with only economy mode. Me? I would either never hire you or would fire you the instant you demonstrated a lead foot.

my thinking is if you want to shift gears fast see about getting a detroit 8 V71 or a 12 V71 and hook an 18 speed to it

Now Hanover, you talking my language. That's old home for me. I think many things have evolved since then. I did visit back in 98 and found a number of places turning to ruin unfortunately.
