I’m not impressed with the sloppy way they build engines. They don’t give 2 ####s about liner protrusion.

Can they not "just" get the cab harness and gauges and all that out of a wrecked 389 and convert it back to a normal dash? I figure it's just a matter of time before somebody figures out how to get through whatever Paccar has in the way.

Yeah l wonder where if they are making their own harnesses to sync up the CAT with the new CANBUS rig. The place in Washington State that made them for the glider kit companies wouldn't make one for any EPA tractor to swap out an older engine from what l heard. Yet l have seen people posting about buying brand new rigs and swapping in pre emission engines. Perhaps it is just lunch counter talk not true. If you can afford to do that you cab afford the DEF and any issues. You are giving up all the tractor manufacturers warranties also.

I have friends in NY state who took out emissions engines and put in non emissions pre 2000 CAT engines. When stopped by DOT they never have had an issue. They show them paperwork certifying the date of engine manufacture and DOT has not had a problem with them running the engines and Paper logs. now that’s not to say EPA is ok with it , they haven’t had been stopped by them yet but who knows what will happen if they get wise to it , since it is legally not a true glider. I think by law if you have to replace an engine in a emissions truck you have to put the same engine in as far as emissions requirements.

If the state that they are doing this in allows them to get an assembled title or rebuilt title if you put an older engine in, then that actually is a glider.

I think Most states have something similar. In Pennsylvania you can take either a salvage vehicle or a vehicle that if you did something major like swap the cabs they will give you a rebuilt or remanufactured title. In Pennsylvania I believe that reconstructed title they give you is the same as a glider is titled.

If Nebraska gives you an assembled or reconstructed title, I think DOT or even the EPA would not have a problem with that.

Also bear in mind that a reconstructed title is a completely different title than you have from the manufacturer.

So from the factory you'll have a Freightliner VIN number f u y whatever it is, but when you have a reconstructed title from the state it will be Pennsylvania reconstructed title number such and such.

If I was going to buy something like that I would need to have detailed history that I could show if I ever sold the truck, that shows the before-and-after and why it was considered reconstructed, because often reconstructed Vehicles were salvage vehicles and no one wants to buy a salvage vehicle that was reconstructed.

Unless you can show how and why it was reconstructed, often reconstructed vehicles are not worth very much and people are afraid to buy them.

Some insurance companies are refusing to insure "rebuilt" vehicles.

No one is working with the dot, they have little to do with this, they have to go through the state and being assigned new vins because they are titling them as assembled vehicles.

Exactly, my underwriter wants to see the actual paper work on the parts used to build the vehicle with assembled vehicles. If I can’t have the builder produce that paper work, they won’t insure the truck.

I would ask multiple people and possibly if it’s a law or rule they can point to.

Big difference in a employee saying something true to maybe it is maybe it is, just get him out so They can answer the next guy.

People are scared of assembled/salvaged vehicles because they automatically assume it's been wrecked and who knows what hillbilly put it back together. If it is titled the same way as a glider nobody is going to be afraid to buy it off you unless gliders or preemission trucks or engines are outlawed for interstate use.
I know a father/son bodyshop that does almost entirely salvage/reconstructed work on cars, they never seem to have a problem selling them and they're asking stupid money for them.
