Ok make a long story short, we purchased the truck about a year and a half ago and about 6 months into owning it the (Holset) turbo blew up on me.. Got it fixed almost $4500 later everything is good for oh 11 months when it blew up again coming thru Moab, Utah.. Luckily we were within the 12 month warranty and it was replaced for about $400 for labor.. That was at the end of August and on my way home guess what, the turbo is once again squeeling like a pig... :biggrin_25510: 3 turbos in a year???? Can someone please give some insight to why this may be happening??

may be U r not lucky?

but as I can see VGT turbos are weak point of some engines, like DD, Iveco Cursor, Cat and other... why? Becouse all turbos are made by Garret, Holset, Shwizer! Seems to me Garret makes the best, but they play small Jet engines game now, that's why Holset and Shwizer supply engine makers now! So look at turbo brands under cabs and hoods of different trucks! Volvo, Iveco, Mercedes, CAT, MAN, Paccar, Penta, MTU do not make turbos!!!!

Did it really blew up or was the VGT mechanism only stuck? Did they use the latest version as a replacement? The price of the VGT Holset these days is only about 2000 euros, the price has come down a lot lately and the latest versions are very reliable.

They don't make any of the parts they are assembling at the engine factory. Pistons from Mahle, fuel system from Bosch or Delphi, block and head castings from some subcontractor, crank and camshaft from other etc. They are just designers and assembly line.

They are not, many of them are cast in Germany or Finland, for example. MAN and Scania use same company to cast their blocks, some of them are not very good.

Mercedes and Detroit Diesel own cast plants, combined with assembly plants
