Engine cranks but doesn't want to start. When switch is on, check engine light is steady til switch is off. Won't let me connect DDDL and manually check codes on dash because neither is communicating with the ECM. I already checked the 2 fuses in the battery box. Primary filter empties after each crank, leaving it dry like if it's starving for fuel. It must be something electronical than mechanical. Just not sure where else to start and troubleshoot this before the unfortunate happens and taking it to a shop

Have you checked the main harness to the ecm for brittle or burnt spots? The filter running empty would suggest the fuel pumps not working, but if the ecm is not communicating, that could possibly explain it. I’d start with the least expensive possibility, and work my way up. There about a half zillion wires in that harness, and it only takes one to short, and burn thru, or get brittle, and break. Good luck to ya brother.

I think he answered his own question.

The filter shouldn't be dry. Sounds like you've lost prime. Its Sucking air somewhere.
