The spring in the pump is to bypass the pressure if the 2nd fuel filter plugs, it should be higher relief pressure than the valve in the filter housing.I have a 07 mxs and my pressure was 80 lbs. I bought the new spring for the pump ($49) and went to kw and got a new pressure valve for the filter housing ($24) still only 80 lbs. Then I was in Sioux Falls,SD at Tonys diesel and asked him about it he went to the shelf and got a relief valve for a nsx (I think) and I now have 100lbs.

You can use the vale on the spd serial number for the regen system located on the top front of the filter base it will put it up to around 110-120 psi. but be carefull around 130 psi you will start to lose hp. Also if you have an oring on the inj. that is week it will finish it off and start putting fuelin the oil. the sping kit will also help on the pump but it is for the newer style pump. I'l lpost part number friday afternon .
Also note this will increese fuel temp aat the inj. because the inj use fuel to also cool them down.

If there was a needle valve on the return line would it not just slow the flow down, increasing pressure?

You want to have the same volume of fuel flow through the cylinder head while increasing pressure. The fuel gets very hot when you restrict volume to increase pressure. So you need to increase volume to increase fuel pressure in the head. This still allows the fuel to get too hot in my opinion and should have a cooler installed on the fuel return line back to the tanks.

Does shimming the pump put extra wear on it do you think? Is there any other way to get the air out of the system other than a Fass or similar system?

Are you sure you purged the air all out? Sounds like air in the lines
