hello I have a 2006 freightliner Columbia with the Detroit diesel 60 series and the engine oil is mixing in coolant. Right now I’m told it’s a bad oil cooler along with a cylinder head. Right now with parts and labor I’m looking at around $7,500. I was also thinking of buying a used engine and switching them out. Any input?

I would replace the oil cooler.

Cracked liner would put coolant in the oil. He said he has oil in the coolant.

Have you noticed any air compressor issues? Not building air? Any oil in AIR TANKS?
CHECK AND REPLACE THE OIL COOLER and if the problem still there after replacing the oil cooler, I would check the air compressor - duh there is oil and coolant,

Common problem- oil cooler. Why did they say head?Is it pushing anti freeze out of radiator? Are you having to add coolant? Beware of quick diagnostics. I’ve been told many times “ You need an OH , or you got a cracked head. Thank God I didn’t listen to them. Probably just a bad oil cooler, however if the coolant is getting pressurized by a cracked head or bad gasket, pitted liner or whatever, the oil cooler may have been the weakest point, that is it was corroded already, get a pressure test. See if coolant is building excess pressure. Simple test. Hook up gauge onto radiator, start truck and watch for pressure to build up. That will tell if there’s a major problem or not.

That’s probably what’s wrong. Not too expensive. A little hard to get to on your Truck. Have to remove some stuff to get it out. I can’t imagine it being more than 4 hrs labor. Cooler maybe $200 these days.Good time to change thermostats, and hoses if needed. You’ll have new antifreeze hoses and thermostats. Should be good for at least 4 yrs. Keep an eye on coolant dca levels. Make sure they test with a test strip, when getting oil changed. Add dca or change coolant filter using a pre charged filter, if you have one.Its the Cheapest and often most overlooked preventative maintenance. Avoids pitted liners, rotted radiators stuck thermostats. Bad coolant causes more early OH than dirty oil does. IMO
