In early 2010 I got my CDL in NY and went to drive for Werner. But my home life was not set up for the 6 and 7 weeks OTR. I am a single dad, 2 kids at home,(24 and 16). Plus being a single dad the money was terrible.By October 2010, I had to quit. With no local jobs available, I stopped driving and haven't since Werner.
I enjoyed OTR, obviously Werner has a few issues, but I had a brand new truck and I was learning the job.
Well my son is now 18 and headed for college next year. I am beginning the process of looking at selling my house and going back on the road. I have no connection to
this area and can relocate anywhere. I have an excellent driving and personal history. NO accidents tickets and such.
Any thoughts on how to take my time and restart up driving?
Thank you to all and have a safe holiday!

Avoid the you-know-whos lol.
Good luck. -
Since you're willing to relocate, think about one of the nine states with no personal income tax. May as well got to a warmer climate. Las Vegas, etc. You will need a refresher course also. Best wishes and enjoy your new life.

Thank you,
I have started to make a list of what is important. I agree, no income tax is near the top. I am from the east coast but I enjoyed driving out west more.
Since i will have no debt and very few bills, pay rate or miles is a tiny bit less important then working for a good company with excellent equipment and service.
But they probably go hand in hand. -
Living out West will have you in the hiring area for some good companies.
Swift has a refresher school in Phoenix.
Knight has a terminal in Las Vegas.
I believe you will be in the hiring area for Fairchild Freight (reefer)& System Transport (reefer & Flatbed); they run lower 48 & Alaska.
You may be in the freight corridor for Navajo & Interstate Distributor & JBS Carriers & Marten Transport also.
Anyway you are in a good situation now to have a good enjoyable life.Last edited: Nov 24, 2012
Jesse Jammer Thanks this. -
Hey Chinatown,
Thank you for the good info. I will look into those companies. funny I was only driving for about 6+ months, but I miss the road. I enjoyed it. Now I wont have the stress and worries of money and home time so much.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Try aiming for the smaller companies. You will be less likely to have to take an expensive refresher course. Overall it will be better working for a smaller outfit. Whatever you do, don't sell the house until you have a good 3-4 months under your belt with your chosen company. I am sure you know anything can happen in that amount of time, especially when you first get going out there. Take the time to shop around the country and find yourself a good place to call home. You may decide to live somewhere near your next employer to make things easier or for getting home more often.
Good luck man..Jesse Jammer Thanks this.
