    Hello all,

I am a 20 year old waiting to obtain my CDL when I turn 21.

    I just had a few questions -

    1. I currently live in CA, but still hold my Driver's License (regular) in the state of Texas (pain in the butt to switch). My question is: Since I live in CA, do I need to have a CA license to obtain my CDL here or will my TX license work?

I am a technically a resident of Texas because I'm registered to vote and have a license, however, I do have a lease and a job (for which I pay all appropriate CA income taxes) in CA.

    2. I would like to be "based" out here in California (Orange County) when I sign on to a trucking company. Can someone give me some recommendations of what companies to look into?

My preference would be a company that has training for CDL, has decent mileage pay, is dry van or refridgerated, over the road driving preferred, but not opposed to regional work, and a few days every 3 or 4 weeks for home time (I don't have a significant other or kids, but would like to have some time off to spend with my parents/friends from time to time.).

Thank you in advance for any responses you can give me.

My experience; I have NM license. I work a couple years in Nevada, a bit in Texas, still retaining the NM ticket. Was told by HR folks it sometimes depends on insurance requirements. I always kept a fairly recent NM fuel receipt ( personal ) to show I had been "home". Interstate, I doubt you'll have any issues. Ohh I just re-read your post..California???? Good Luck!! I can say that 'cause I'm FROM there. Operative word;"from".

You can obtain a CDL at age 18 in Ca. You just can't drive interstate until 21. If you are starting from square 1 to obtain a CDL in Ca., you'll need to have a Ca. Learners permit (CDL), so in your case, you would transfer your Tx. D/L to Ca., then obtain a learners permit and eventually get your CDL (Ca.). You cannot test out at a Ca. DMV with a Tx. D/L. If you want to retain your Tx. D/L, return to Tx. and obtain your CDL. It boils down to what you claim as residency, Tx. or Ca.

    Alright I hear ya.

I'd probably be better off trying to get a CDL from Texas, that way I don't have to change so much stuff, which I suspected would be the case.

So, based on the above comments about my preferences and getting a TEXAS CDL, which companies would you recommend I check out?

I already have looked into Schneider and Stevens Transport. I quite like what I've heard about them so far and their training sounds really good.

    Thanks for all your help!
