Having a small dilemma about where to go with driving career. I have been driving OTR dry van with a large company for 15 months. Clean record so far, good work ethic etc. Got married 9 months ago and want off the road to start a family.
My goal eventually is to be home every night and still be able to make a decent living.
Dry bulk sounds like a good deal. Decent pay, home a few nights a week.
I did the driving school/ 1 year contract thing. Now what?
1 year experience... could use some career advice

Our Company has 5 trucks that just run back and forth across the River up here in Soo Canada to the Soo in the US. We call them the River rats. they are paid by the hour and make good money, So there is stuff like that,. Good luck
briank, mje and kerosene jockey Thank this. -
Check with all of your Bulk companies in your area. They all pay well and get you home often.

Smart move going with the bulk company.

Dry Bulk pneumatic tanks can be a little messy, you'll always be involved in unloading, and often have to load the tank. It's not just a driving job. I'd find out if they are paying per hour, or a percentage of a the load revenue.

i just start doing bulk 2 week ago and it is a really good job. and a good part of the time is loading and unloading. it is really interesting , pay is good and u go home really often

If you had another year of OTR experience, I'd recommend A&R Transport but they require 2 years of OTR experience. Check with Bulkmatic and Smith Transporters.
mje Thanks this. -
Just check out anything and everything local around you. With 22 months, I just landed the job I'll probably retire at. The place was pretty much my goal when I started. Could of gone there right at 1 year exp but I was enjoying the place I started and teaming with my best friend. I'm actually kind of bummed to not be teaming anymore with him but it's time to move on, make more money, and be home more. Just try everywhere, you never know what you may find.

I have the same problem Briank. I have been driving for 16 years and want to be home every night and make good money (don' t want to be married though or have any more kids). I have an excellent DAC report, a spotless MVR and experience driving just about anything including heavy haul and operating heavy equipment. I have even owned my own trucks for many years. I live in Central Florida and it seems most local gigs around here pay $8 - $10 an hour which works out to around $7 if you buy insurance.
I think were in the same boat and made a wrong turn after high school when everyone told us to go to college!
If you find something let me know.
Good luck!
