I've got a strange question for you all. The FMCSA states we have a 10 hour rest period. How many of you actually take only 10 hours?

I still can sleep a good 8 hours solid. But it seems like otr drivers have more free time?

...I want to pick back up an old hobby, but it always seems like I'm rushing. So I'm really curious how you guys do your 10 hours.

there are a number of ways to do it. you only need 8 in the sleeper and 2 to do whatever you want. but if your going to be parked longer then 10. i've never been questioned for logging it all off duty.

you said you only sleep for 8. that gives you 2 to eat, shower, and do whatever else it is you do.

Just depends on the load..If I have 'extra time' on a load I often take 11-12 hours.
As long as I get the loads there on time company doesn't care.

I don't like the Split so I don't normally do it. Except in rare cases.

8-10 hours is a long time when your not tired...

It's a crap shoot to get the HOS and my body to work together In an ideal way.

I understand how to log it. I'm trying to figure out how you all do it. For me, it just never seems like enough. Considering I unload my own truck I'm often tired by my day's end.

I am starting to think a little differently about my dispatcher though. I've often done pre-trips logged as off duty and things like that because I've been given loads I can barely make unless I let my clock set me as driving a mile down the road.

The 10 hours off was designed for the local driver that goes to their own home each night. 2 hours commuting time to and from the terminal, and 8 hours for shower, eat, sleep, etc. 10 hours is much more than an OTR sleeper driver needs.

Keep in mind that there's no regulation about WHAT you do on your 10 hours off, just that you actually get 10 hours off.

This is exactly what HOS is designed to avoid. If you can do this type of schedule safely and without being fatigued, then by all means do so. If you have concerns about being able to safely work that kind of schedule, then let your dispatcher know this. Spell it out plainly: "I will not have enough time to deliver this load on time and safely, due to HOS constraints." When I do that, my dispatcher asks how much I need the delivery appointment adjusted, and I tell them. Either the delivery time gets adjusted, or I get assigned to a different load.

You will probably become more acustomed to it in time. If it was just the usual OTR job you could ask them to slow you down so you don't burn out, but it sounds like you are doing something different.

I'm dedicated. So I have both to unload my trailer, and all of my appointments are "on time" versus windowed.
