Not a cb pro by any means and am currently using a cobra 29 ltd chrome that had a mod kit put in it and has been peaked and tuned, question being would i be able to talk a greater distance by hooking up a 200 watt linear or changing the radio to something like a connex hp or general lee 10 meter radio? Of course realizing that using a 10 meter radio converted to operate on am is not legal but neither is using the linear . I have a Wilson 2000 antenna that has the swr set to 1.5

im afraid that changing the radio out would lead to reliability issues. My reports or great as for as most other truckers think my radio is loud and clear considering it is barefoot and just a cobra 29 with a road king mike. Would just like a little bit more range in transmitting and receiving.

thanks for any advise in advance.

Depending on the radio or amp you're using.

A 200 watt amp being driven by a Cobra 29 will out talk your typical General lee or Connex 3300 that is barefoot.

A Connex 4300-300 or a Galaxy 98VHP might be able to go neck to neck with the Cobra 29 with the 200 watt amp but then you have to factor in dollar for dollar values....for example, unless trucker Bubba has fallen on hard times, you'll most likely shell out $400 + for either the 4300-300/98VHP...whereas if you play your cards right, you could probably get into the 29 with the 200 watt amp for under $250.

The other problem with the Lee or the 3300.....or any 10 M export....is that band switch....if you flip it by accident and don't know what freq. you're on, you can easily transmit in an area that you're not supposed to i.e. the 10 M ham band in the CW segment....in other words, you're better off staying on the 40 allotted CB channels....

With a Cobra 29 and an amp, as long as you're not bleeding over on someones TV, phone, radio, etc....you will most likely not ever hear about it.

So...for the best bang for the buck IMO you're better off with the 29 and an amp.

    Hopefully this helps

If you like the 29, stick with the 29 and get the Amp..."More Bang for the Buck"...IMO the Exports are not worth the money...Specially since more than likely you won't be getting off the regular 40 CB channels anyway.

Only way I can see where a Export maybe a better option, is if the company you drive for won't allow Amps in their trucks...If this is for a personal vehicle, then forget the Export and it's bell's & whistles, and just buy a Box...And have money left over for Gas!

Good advice. Unless you are planning to talk outside the legal 40 channels, I would not buy an export radio either. And I own three of them!

Ditto. And remember that the Cobra's receiver is already optimized in the CB band, unlike the exports that have to be able to cover a really wide range of frequencies. Of course, all bets (or at least most of them) are off as soon as the OP mentioned that his '29 has "had a mod kit put in it and has been peaked and tuned"; heaven only knows what some Golden Screwdriver has installed, clipped, or just used his electric screwdriver to wind all the slugs in/out/etc. Most places with nothing to tune with beyond a cheapie wattmeter and some diddle sticks often (as I've found afterwards) randomly tuned slugs that affect only the receiver and, upon seeing no difference in transmitter output or "trashulation", just leave them where they had turned them to.

consider the 29 as compared to a 10 meter sure you have the 200 watt and you could buy a stryker or a magnum that does all that but i like the 29 setup myself and i like the way a 29 sounds if tuned right and properly it will do you better

export radios are good and not knocking them but with the setup you have now why change it

i own both a 29 and General Lee. both are peaked and tuned. and frankly i prefer the 29. If you want more range get better antenna.
