I am deciding between two trucks. One with a 10 speed OD and one with a 13 speed OD. Both in a dd15 Detroit going OTR. Any thoughts?

Would like to help--but need a little more info--what are you hauling(weight-type of trailer)where are you running--who is driving--how much experience do they have? What is the gear ratio w/each truck?

For me if both trucks are in good shape and you would be fine buying either one i would go with the 13spd better resale falue plus a better tranny all around IMO. When pulling a hill you can split the upper gears and maintain speed alot better than with a 10spd.

A 13 is basically a 9-where you can split the top gears--shift your bottom four-the do your range split(up to 5th)at this point you basically have 2 gears in each of the top 4
You do your range split--to the low side of 5th(should be knob--usually red or gray)on side of gear shift handle-back is low side(if right hand is on shifter-put your thumb on the splitter(red/grey knob)if you cannot push the knob back w/thumb--that is low side. OK so now in top side of tranny(5th gear low side)when you are ready to shift next gear--just take your foot off gas and slide that(red/grey)knob forward(that is 5th hi or 6 whatever u wanna call it) Then when you are ready to shift again-shift up(full gearshift move like normal on 8-9-10spd)as the gearshift goes through the neutral position--bring the knob back towards you--continue this until you are in the top side of your top gear--works basically the same in reverse(downshifting)
Now there are all kinds of variables--and gears u can skip etc. But until you get the hang of it just take your time--use every gear--and you will be fine!

If the splitter button is gray, it's a 18, if the splitter is red, it's a 13, these drive about the same except you can split any gear including reverse with 18 speeds.

You are 100% correct--as long as nothing has been tampered with--or rebuilt. My current 18 has a red knob(but we rebuilt this truck out of 2 others)so I used both colors--just in case--but that is very good advice--he might actually get into an 18--that someone thought was a 13!
I thought I was giving him all the variables--but after reading your post I probably should have been more specific!:biggrin_2552:

My driver likes the 13 but 10 speeds are becoming more popular. I am looking for the best fuel milage. Both have a 3.42 gear ratio. Pulling a hopperbottom weighing in 80,000 all the time loaded and sometimes a dry van.

If your driver likes a 13 and YOU feel he is qualified to use it properly--then I would go w/13--it gives you more flexibility--you can get a little better mileage(again used properly) and if you are planning on trading/selling later typically a 13 will be worth alittle more and easier to sell.
    Good Luck to you!
