If your using a top quality oil save it for me. I'll run it through a centrifuge and put it in my truck...
Oil doesn't wear out it just gets filled with contaminants...
18wheelsarollin Thanks this. -
Maverick is running 70,000 miles between oil changes. Not sure what they are using as far as oil or additives though.

True, it is not uncommon for some to get real long intervals between full oil changes, but... there is more to the story for some. If someone is using a Gulf Coast bypass filter (which is a good one) you are replacing 2-3 gallons of oil everytime they change the bypass filter. So.... they HAVE changed their oil after 3-4 bypass filter changes. Heck, anyone can go 500,000 miles without pulling the pan plug at that rate. They still have to change the full flow filter every so often, and that is more makeup oil. I would like to see test results of someone using one of the other filters that take only a quart or two of makeup oil with a bypass filter change. That is a real test of the oil and filter.
I have no dog in this hunt. I used a bypass filter at one time, but the wear numbers and oil longevity did not make it a cost effective solution for me. Others have better results. I can easily go between 30,000 and 40,000 miles between full oil changes (per oil samples) just using Schaeffer synthetic blend and a Wix XD filter (has full flow and bypass filters in same canister for $47)... no additives. My oil samples were not much better using a bypass unit and standard full flow oil filter. Only got a little longer interval. With the cost of the bypass filters and the makeup oil, wasn't worth the effort. This is my experience and realize it is only one story. Some have gotten great results and it is worth it. But disabling the EGR on my Cummins did more for the oil and engine than keeping it plugged in and using a bypass. -
My friend tells me that all the time, that i throw out better oil than he puts in............

What bypass where you using?
Somehow I expected that you were using someof the most expensive oil on the market..
LOL

I was using the FS2500. I know.... the Spinner II will do a better job, the Gulf Coast will do a better job, etc. Either way, the wear numbers (not soot levels) were not much different. I took care of most of the soot problem anyway without a bypass filter. Just disabled the EGR on my ISX and soot levels are way lower. When I balanced the cost of the replacement bypass filters, the occasional full flow filter, the more frequent oil samples, etc.... just could and still cannot justify putting another unit on. I probably am wrong that another bypass unit or a spinner would work fine, but not ready to make another plunge in that pool.

340000 miles with out an oil change. When I get home i'll post my test numbers.

Cowpie,
What were the wear metal #'s like when you were running the bypass?
