You can't get 2 drivers to agree that the green beans at the buffet are from a can, or fresh. Much less shutting down the country.

Good luck with that, let me know how that works out for ya.

The drivers at every terminal/yard/location, at every company would have to vote to be represented by a union. If they were ever actually get a contract, it wouldn't be a national contract, but a lot of separate contracts. The Teamsters were able to get a national master agreement because before deregulation they had virtually every company at every location in that agreement. They could not do that today. The Megas of the ATA would spend whatever they needed to to keep unions out. And even if the union did get in there, all of those mega companies combined don't haul even 10% of the freight.

Then there all of the O/Os and independent contractors out there, who are forbidden by Federal law to organize for the purpose of setting rates.

In other words, major union membership just isn't going to happen in this industry.

And I'm not saying this because I am anti-union. I am not. But I am a realist.

...or people can choose not to run illegal.
Yeah, some companies push for it, but if no one bites, they don't have any way to force you.
If you won't say no, you are just part of the problem.
After all, someone selling illegal and dangerous drugs on the street is merely a businessman who operates outside the law. Just like an independent truck driver who operates outside the law. Whether you sell those drugs from a legitimate Pizza Shop or drive as a 1099 with false logs, you're endangering others with your behavior.
We are a society held together loosely by laws we all have to live under. Many people here have been broke, hungry, or without a place to stay. Those situations can test your character. It's time to stand tall and count yourself one of the good guys. Cold, hungry, and broke, but a good guy.

That sounds an awful lot like people taking responsibility for their actions, and nobody wants to do that anymore. It’s way easier to blame others for your choices.

Well, What's an HOS violation, when you are already violating the Tax Code?
