Have a 98 Peterbilt 377 with a Detroit series 60. I called multiple dealers and spent 30mins at a Freightliner dealership trying to get the same sensor shown in the picture (middle and right one). They give me one that has a 2pin like a clip in, they say that's but mine off the vin but mine is like that. what do i have to do? Get the one there giving me and retrofit basically? Did Detroit update the sensors? i got mine a few years shown in the pic
12.7 Detroit 60 Cant find coolant temp sensor

Ok, there more than one coolant temp sensor used in your engine. One sensor, the two wire connector type, is the sensor the ECM uses. The other one with the single stud is for your coolant temp gauge. Make sure you specify what you need when you call them. They probably don't know or have forget about separate temp sensors for the gauge.

blairandgretchen, Oldironfan, AModelCat and 3 others Thank this. -
The two i need are on the ones that are in the middle and right side. Have tried enough, will take them out to get a part number but ive called many dealers havent had any luck
-
Take them out and wonder on down to a salvage yard or two, and see if you can make a deal until you can get new ones.
Michael H and Peterbiltt Thank this. -
Have a pete dealer look it up to the vin. I recall being in this situation. One is coolant temp for gauge, one is for ecm, and one is for a/c, fan control. Man its been along time but I think pete is the only one that used it.
-
The third one is probably for just the coolant temp high warning light in the dash.
Peterbiltt Thanks this. -
If it's for the gauge in the dash, the sender is most likely Peterbilt # 17-02791. The high temp alarm/light sender should be Peterbilt # 05-13721-220.
They are not Detroit parts, so you need to tell them what it's for to get the correct one. If all you're telling them is a temperature sending unit for a Detroit, you'll get the one on the far left. You need to tell them that it's on the OEM side, gauge or warning light.RocketScott, spsauerland, Heavyd and 3 others Thank this. -
Gotta go to Pete. Oem sensors, got nothing to do with detroit
Heavyd and Peterbiltt Thank this. -
One's for your ECM. (The one on the Left)
One's for your Gauge, &
One's for your Horton fan Clutch..
EDIT: if my foggy old brain cells are working..LOL
the one in the Middle is your Horton Sender, It should have the Temp setting Stamped on It of What Temp the Horton will kick in. The Gauge one should also have some Numbers ect Stamped on It Too.
Any self respecting Parts Guy should be able to sort It Out for you..Last edited: Jan 5, 2018
Peterbiltt Thanks this. -
One way to be sure, I see the metal wire tags still on it from Pete. Those stamped #'s would tell him exactly where those wires go. The wiring is the same as a 379 (with the exception of slightly different headlight wiring).
