OPS problem:
1. Truck lost prime
2. Truck has low/neglected batteries
3. Previous attempts to start the truck probably killed/over heated the starter, hence the tap tap of the starter
4. Truck cranked but wouldn't start, so driver sprayed it with starter fluid
5. Truck ran off starter fluid, idle raised up then died
6. Knocking noise was probably just fuel knock or lack off
7. Probably lost prime and OP killed the batteries and starter trying to start it
8. Now I start crap
9. Now mod intervenes
10. Mod gives stern talk to poster we don't incite arguments!.

i missed it if anyone posted it but a bad injector will put fuel in the oil.apparently that is not the problem. I triple the too much ether scenario being the noise.not being a mechanic but having been around 12.7's for years,it does read as if you have a fuel problem.sucking air,bad pump,an o-ring being old, thus the air sucking, somewhere along the fuel line, etc.
i would lay off the starting fluid and would hook up a code reader/laptop and not throw money at the truck. -
Posable that starter hung up after the eng. started and was still turning making the sound you heard?
RAGIN CAJUN Thanks this. -
if it was fine when you shut it off do what freightlinerman suggests in my exp 90% of the time it is a battery voltage to the ecm issue it will crank but unless you have sufficient voltage to the ecm it will not permit it to run. the power line for the ecm will most likely be one wire in your battery box hooked to a positive post inline fuse blown broken wire or it is hooked to a bad battery
If it runs for 30 sec or so then dies check your coolant level
or keep throwing starter fluid to it wash out the cylinders or create a real big boom it is the 4th of july after allMilktanker and freightlinerman Thank this. -
Ha ha ha! Good one

DO NOT use ether! I have never used ether and probably never will. If the engine wont crank, what good is pumping ether in it? There is no doubt the engine will start on ether. But you're not finding the root cause of why its not starting or why it wont stay running.
If your batteries are low, you can easily burn up the starter. Try starting a truck with weak/dead batteries, give it a couple tries and touch the posts on the terminal, you will almost burn your fingers. Just imagine what you're doing to the starter..
No one is trying to start or incite anything. OP needs to call a mechanic before he does serious damage to the truck. -
OldHasBeen and dynogt16 Thank this.
