You really need a dyno and a blowby test at a real detroit shop. They can give you a true health report on that engine.

Thats where its going next week. That oil is from the front cover crack. It’s gotten worse since it was diagnosed.
It’s a shame. I only drive 1500 miles a week. Sometimes less. Total miles on this rebuild is a whopping 11,126.austinmike, Bean Jr., Feedman and 3 others Thank this. -
That's a good place to start. If I was going to have my engine rebuilt it would be done by detroit diesel, or buy a factory rebuilt and swap them. Too much room for error to trust anybody I wasnt certain of.austinmike, Feedman, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this.

Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way. Like always. I didn’t think an engine shop could mess up a Series 60 with the lead mechanic doing this for over 30 years.austinmike, Dino soar, Feedman and 5 others Thank this.

Well, got the quote. $16, 600 for an inframe. This includes a new gear case and I added a new oil pan.

Hers the upgraded cover and bracket I mentioned. 4 extra bolts on top, supposed to fix or avoid the problem of holes wallowing out and bolts breaking. Looks like maybe just the inner cover is different.

Just called Detroit. Parts came in to replace the front cover and the oil pan that I wanted replaced. The service manager went home sick. Just my luck. He apparently runs a tight ship because they didn’t want to schedule me to come in without his approval. Maybe for once I will get some competent work done.

Probably well worth the wait. He probably wants to make sure the front gear train gets inspected good, and the cover is sealed up properly. It’s a lot of Labor. Might need some new rubber bushings/steel sleeves grommets for the oil pan bolt holes. They can always be changed later, one at a time, if it leaks. Main thing is they inspect everything. Gear timing marks, bullgear and lash setting. Make sure the numbered piston rods are in the right place, thrust washers are installed right and have proper clearances. Whatever else they can check while it’s off. What about the vibration? Is it real bad at idle. Does it ever go away? Are the new fuel lines tight? Mine hasn’t shuttered in a while. Still don’t know what’s wrong. I’m thinking maybe because I had the injector calibrations set differently than they were supposed to be set.
