Hi ya'll. I started driving two weeks ago, and couldn't help noticing all the 12 volt appliances and gadgets at truck stops. In your experiences, what works, and what doesn't. Specifically, the ovens and coolers, but I'd like input about any other gadget or appliance you have used. I bought a 12 volt oven, and it seems to do ok for heating sandwiches, or soup, but I don't think it could cook meat adequately. I need to get some sort of fridge or cooler soon, ice is starting to cost quite a bit. My company can install a 2kw power inverter for me in my truck for $200. Do you think it would be better getting that, or just going with 12 volt stuff? Also, I'm worried about draining my batteries. After using the bunk heater for 12 hours it shuts off the power to te sleeper because of battery levels. Any ideas? Thanks

Though it will be better to go with a 2k inverter and a dorm fridge, I've had good luck with the coleman 12 volt cooler as well as igloo. Thing with the 12 volt coolers is that they cool down about 36 degrees lower than ambient temp., so it will be good to keep your drinks cold and store some sandwich meat. With a fridge, you can keep frozen foods longer, but a 12 volt cooler is fine to. I would still get the inverter so you can have a microwave in the truck. I have a 1500 watt inverter and a microwave and it works just fine, but I still run a 12 volt cooler because I have no room for a fridge in my truck.

12 hours in the bunk? What are you, on vacation? Haha. I'm kidding. I'd get the inverter installed. You have more options when it comes to gadgets! Also, I'd you're worried about draining you batteries just fire up the truck every 5-7 hours.

Don't buy anything from a truck stop I made that mistake and had to return them all for being extremely cheap. Well brand name GPS and bluetooth units are OK, but the Road Pro type accessories suck. Go to Amazon and buy adapters or higher quality products. I have both 12v and 120v adapters plus spares in case any of them go bad.

I've heard good results out of the "lunch box" cookers. Look like a lunch box and you can cook soups, pasta, etc. Just put it in tin foal or a disposable pan.

Yeah there great if you have time to wait for it to cook. When I had one it took forever to cook something.

I have used the 'Road Pro' oven... (Lunch box cooker)... It gets up to 350* and I've cooked pork roasts, oatmeal, soups (although when moving the oatmeal and soup can get messy). Basically any crockpot meal can be made in one. Use the aluminum loaf pans from Walmart, or the crockpot liners... (I have 'pre made' some and have them in the freeze at the house... So on short home times I can grab and go) Both work... OH, I've even browned sausages!! Although it did take a while... LOL!

The 12 volt oven works great. Roasts, hams, any thing that fits. I grab a preseasoned pork roast from Walmart, put it in a foil pan, add some.rice, close.it.up and let it.cook for an hour and a half and dinner is served.

I use the coleman 12v cooler

Get the inverter. I have a microwave, and a small Foreman Grill.

DONT BUY TRUCK STOP TRASH. Get an Invertor installed. get a dorm fridge. if you want to cook on the road get a coloman camp stove and a couple bottles, a camp pot set. you can cook what ever you want takes very little room. also a good little microwave will be nice.

I used a 120v crock pot on the road. The truck had a fridge already installed.. dorm type fridge, ran on 12v power. The small Coleman or Igloo 12v coolers, as stated already, work pretty well also. If you plan on running a laptop or any electronic devices through an inverter, make sure you get a surge protector.
