Bought a truck a few months ago with an eaton 13 speed freshly rebuilt. The problem is that it splits in gear perfectly both up and down but if I try to split it while in neutral u just hear it grinding and I can't get it in any gear without flipping it to the low side and back up again.
To try and better explain it goes from 10th to 11th gear just fine but it won't shift from 11th to 12th. I have to go to 13th and then split it back down once I'm in gear to get 12th. I hope you understand what I'm saying. It's kind of hard to explain. I called the shop who rebuilt it and he thinks its just a simple air line or something and isn't worth driving 150 miles back to jersey to have them fix it.
I honestly think the guy I bought it from didnt no about the problem cuz when I test drove it I noticed he shifted with the clutch and I'm thinking that it doesn't do it then. At first I just figured if work around it for awhile but now it's just getting downright annoying and want to make it right.
Any suggestions would be helpful. I no if anyone can help me it's on this forum. Thanks a lot!!
Oh and I don't know of it matters but its an old style transmission without a cooler or anything in my dinosaur 88 Pete lol. Just trying to start out without a huge truck payment

Forgot to add that I did check the air lines on top the transmission and everything seems fine and I don't hear any air leaks no matter what gear it's in while shut off

What model transmision is it. What year is the truck??
Is it an old RTO.
Is it a newer RTLO. They both shift diffrent. An older RTO , don't like to be preselected. The newer RTLO has to be preselected.
If its a RTO your shifting it wrong. If its a RTLO it could be an issue inside.
Just sayin. -
Oh man! Lol! Just realized I didn't read the rest of your post. It's a older RTO and your shifting it wrong. Nothing wrong with the tranny at all. The guy you bought it from shifts it fine cause he knows how to shift properly. You noticed he uses his clutch, that's how your supposed to shift!
Double clutch and quit pre selecting and driving like a cowboy and you'll find it will shift like its supposed too.
The older model transmisions actually took a bit of skill to shift smoothly. Not like the newer ones.
You have to make all your splits in a gear not in neutral. As soon as you do a split in neutral the transmision kinda gets lost and you gotta start all over again.
I learned how to drive on this same transmision and I know exactly what's happening. You can't shift them like the newer ones. It just does exactly like your saying. Save yourself the trip to the shop cuz there is nothing wrong with it.
Maybe go on road rangers website and they might have a video how to properly shift. That includes using what the clutch was designed for.
I laugh at all the bobby big riggers out there who think there real professional because they don't need to use the clutch. They can just float the gears, sure I can too. All it takes is that one time it's not quite in and you put the horsepower to it then bam!!! The shock load is tremendous. This is what breaks stuff.
Don't preselect that RTO and use your clutch. You'll be fine.Last edited: Jul 6, 2013
Brettj3876 and SL3406 Thank this. -
Oh man don't tell me that... I can't shift with the clutch. I would've never guessed that's the problem. I can't believe I have to use the clutch to split. I guess it's good news that the trans is fine but bad news I have to use the clutch lol. I drove an 89 super liner with a 13 in it and never used the clutch and it shifted perfectly. Maybe a newer trans. Thanks a lot for the help. I'll try it tomorrow!!

I bet if you took any truck driver that's only been driving for say the last 15 years or so. And stuck them in a older truck with a RTO. 95 percent of them would have the exact same issues your having. Lol!! The newer low inertia transmisions shift a lot nicer and are way more forgiving.
-
Yea the trans shifts beautifully except that issue... Had to get used to the mech throttle again tho lol. I started in a mechanical throttle and when I went to electronic I hated it. Then I got used to it and now had to go back to it. Amazing the difference between the two.

I mean let's look at it. There's roll over protection, antilock breaks, traction controll, stability control, the list goes on and on and on.
If you took these newbie drivers in these automated company trucks, and put them in a older real truck with a good old mechanical engine and maybe a RTO 12513. Stuck them on a mountain pass in the middle of January, I wonder how long they'd make it. -
I agree. The Mack in my avatar had that rollover protection. Man I hated it. So many curves right before a big uphill and it would shut me down and get on the brakes and screw me for the hill. Like who's driving me or the truck. Cussed it out more than once lol. I like my old truck.... I can work on it with a wrench and there's a logical explanation for all the problems it has ya no
