If you go with a new shaft be sure it has a bushing in the end. It does not fit tightly to the main shaft either.

    Oxbow and AModelCat Thank this.

Wow thats is a significant difference. I'd wait until l got a second opinion before putting it back together too. Did you get the new gear from a rebuilder?

No that was my original gear. I bought the shaft through Kenworth.

I would call a rebuild shop myself and quiz them. Around my area they're usually pretty open with info especially if you say you're going to need some more parts and get them from him good luck on that trans.

I can plainly see in the pics that the old and new shafts seem to have different sized/thickness teeth/splines...there's obviously a clue to the backlash problem.

Too bad things have to be so stinking complicated these days, eh NorthernMechanic? Used to order parts and put 'em in and be done. Now with the vast array of data and electronic systems to locate parts, it seems it's gotten worse and more complicated than using microfiche and books.

Yep and since I did some digging, I believe that if I change that drive gear, I will need to replace the sliding clutch and OD gear because they won't mesh properly since the tooth profile isn't the same.

FWIW I think I'll be returning the new shaft and sticking in a good used one. I can't justify the replacement of a couple hundred dollars worth of new parts just to make this new shaft work. For the amount I plan to drive this truck vs. the amount of wear on the clutch splines, I think it'll last for a long time (wear on the old shaft splines is around maybe 1/32"). I have done clutch jobs in the past with input shafts in much worse condition and they worked just fine.

So I ended up taking the new shaft back and exchanged it for a DOT legal LED lightbar for my pickup :p

I think was a wise choice @NorthernMechanic , i believe you were about to open up a can of worms with that 15 speed.

Definitely. It looks like the mainshaft may have needed to be changed too because there is an updated 6 sided mainshaft key that was likely needed to match the shift collar for the new drive gear.

Dang. I just took it back yesterday. Got a good used one I'm going use. Good to know for future reference. Thanks!
