This business is what it is because of idiots like you, they don't care about the rates, they just want to be cool in the eyes of other Brokeback Cowboys. I'd rather look miserable in the 700 hp D13 Volvo when I'm driving past you standing on the roadside with your blown 800 hp Peterbilt with glassfibre and wood everywhere.

Idiots like me eh? so I guess because I thought that it was cool that he had a nice truck with a cool tranny setup im a idiot I guess? im sorry V8lenny let me bow down to your philosophy of the "Perfect trucking world" where everyone drives European trucks that are all primer grey with the same motor because you apparently think that they are so much better? and no one can be more expressive with their job. so if i decide to get a custom visor and full fenders for my truck i am immediately a fudge packing steering wheel holding cowboy showing off to all my boyfriends?:biggrin_25523: so you dont think our declining industry has anything to do with the flooding of illegal immagrants working for pennies, and driving trucks that should have been off the road a long time ago?
oh and if you don't like my custom peterbilt feel free to look straight ahead ill be long past you in a few minutes anyway:biggrin_25523: ill be sure to keep the hammer down so i don't have to glance at your UGLY truck :biggrin_25525:

CRX, you need to learn to make money first, look cool later.

Lenny is right, this is a business and its being destroyed by idiots who think being cool is more important than making money.

If you can do both, good for you, but if you have to choose, go the money route first.

And by no means am I sayin you're an idiot, so don't take it that way.

lem me to write my view of situation in transport...

here in croatia in 2001 began construction of highways lot of them thought heavy hills with lot of tunnels bridges and lot of rocks

then suddenly begin massive buying of young construction trucks on credit just for show off

...people from various professions( who dont know what is transport) heard that they can earn a lot of money so they buy new trucks and great cars and trying to be "boss"

then in ~2004 major work on freeways are finished there is less and less job some roads were build up to 2007.....
and most of those guys had credits and they were forced to repay credits and to prevent to lose house as hypothec they started to drive anything just to have enough money

and there is less and less job ( not enough for all) and transport prices begin to fall.....in 2007 fuel prices exceeded 8$ for gallon

in 2008 we are strongly affected by the crisis(which is still ongoing) and investors who build something remain without a loan so there is no job ....

now people continue to drop prices just to take over somebodys job to have something to eat ......since dollar is now stronger fuel is now less than before but still similar price .....
for example now my father have job and there are 30 trucks working on that site and every day 10 truckers go to site and offer 20-30% lower price than is already ( now 65% of price is get on fuel) there is a lot of cheating you cant get money for work some guys dont pay for 3-4 years or more

now lot of truckers are bankrupt....

since my country is poorer than US. These changes are seen more quickly

Globalization bring some things ...before you can recognize all european truck companys for their color schemes now they are all white because it is cheaper and less expensive to repair ....one day we all will become a slaves of big companys owner operator will become extinct....

and they who will be still active will look at every cent in their business....there not will be longer trucks with shiny chrome and with 800hp...maybe you still are not in big troubles in US but it is already apparent here...but anyway i heard from some guys from my country who live and drive in US that situation there is not good there are big troubles with payment....

for example here relation between town split and zagreb ( 400km 250mille) with a lot of hills is paid less than 300$ for 25tons of cement... on that relation it is impossible to get lower fuel consumption of 35L (6.7mpg) ( when you are in one direction full and in other empty) if you are loaded in both direction fuel consumption will be 40L (5.85mpg)

if you are loaded in both direction you will spend 250 $ just on fuel(EDIT: in one direction) and you have 14$ for 45km(28mille) of freeway

( it very hilly route with a lot of curves
( it is when you are going off freeway ) if you want to go on freeway on whole trip it will be 100$ in one direction and you will get some better fuel consumption...but it is too expensive ( and YES IT IS SAME FREEWAY THAT IS BUILD FROM 2001-2004) there is no too many trucks here who drive on freeway

So....Is it not possible to make money with a nice looking truck? Is it not possible to have the best of both worlds?
I wouldn't be caught dead in a Volvo, Crapcadia, Cambodia or any of the other "cookie cutter" trucks with the low horsepower motors and plastic everything....And yet, Somehow I'm still making money at this.
I think the "fake" 2 stick tranny splitter is kind of stupid but since it's not on my truck it doesn't effect me. It is the owner of the trucks business and no one elses.
I run my business as a business and part of that business is having nice equipment that my customers like to see at their loading ramps.
I get comments all the time from the regular customers about how nice my truck looks and how well I keep it up. I deliver my loads on time 100% of the time too...No bullshi+ excuses about weather and all of the other garbage that drivers come up with to justify their poor performance.
Maybe these things contribute to me having a higher degree of success at this than some and that breeds resentment from those who just can't hack it!

If you want to drive some plastic nightmare down the road...Great!
But don't come in here and tell me that because I choose to run my business and my truck with a little style that I'm messing up the industry for you "serious" business men.
I guarantee you that you haul cheaper freight than me and that you'll take a crappy load with your cheap looking truck just to keep the wheels turning while I will sit and wait rather than haul that garbage! When my wheels turn it's for a decent profit, Not just to get by.

When I see some piece of crap Junkliner, Volvo or T2000 with the fairings falling off and the fancy taped on cardboard sign of the really cool "Home Depot" stick on letters that you "serious" business men like to run because "looks don't matter" all I see is a once proud industry in decline because of the complete lack of pride that you bottom dwellers seem to have in your business and your equipment.

Your post seems to me more like a touch of jealosy because you just can't figure out how we do it....No matter how many times we tell you.

    DON'T HAUL CHEAP FREIGHT!!!!

Did you forget to shave your head today, I think the hair is messing with your reception....lol

I think the point that people are trying to make is that looking cool doesn't make you any more money than not.

As for customers, except a small based more personal and specialized customer, they could give two craps less what you drive as long as you haul it cheap. Thats the plain and simple fact, you and I both know that.

As for compliments from customers...... 90+% don't know the difference from a KW to a Volvo.

I do agree that I have no interest in ever driving a plastic POS truck. I want something to last more than 5 years!

The point I see from Black W900 and what I agree with, is that if you dont care what your driver/supplier looks like, truck, self, or otherwise, you probably don't care what you and your company look like as well. Which is probably a company myself nor blackw900 want to be involved in. And I dont mean "care" enough to the point to say something or put down to his face, but something should raise up in your mind when that plastic POS rolls in, driver exits in sweats or other pj attire, etc...

well back to the topic. I have had a truck that had a 15x4 the main box was a standerard 15spd with the deep side switch on the dash. no i didn't trick it out like that that is the way it was done in 82. the 4spd was added so I could start heavy loads. this was the way things were done before 18spds and 500+ horse power motors. remember that we didn't always have big horse power. so you had to make up for it by having gears lots and lots of gears. I have seen a diamond reo. Yes it is a real truck look it up. with a 15 main box a 4spd bronie and two seed rear ends. that is a 25rpm spit for those of you who are counting. in front of that mess was what they called a 262 sidewinder it was a cummins with a blower on the side since it was an inline six. it put out a scary amount of power. 190 horse. i couldn't keep up with him with us going over wheeler ridge (grapevine) with my massive powerful 400 3406-a cat.

Either you or I missed something here? We or I wasn't talking about drivers, it was about one person buying a truck.

Now, if you think the sweat pants wearing steering wheel holders is just in plastic trucks, you're seriously mistaken and need to get out more.I highly doubt you think that though.

As for my stuff, its well kept and clean for the most part, except in winter months. I try to keep it sprayed off but this winter has been a real PIA to try and keep up with it.
