I got my base station set up. It's basically a ten foot piece of pvc pipe bracketed to the eve of my house with my 2 meter mobile antenna attached to the top. I am getting out pretty good on 2 meter but plan to eventually get a 20 peice of PVC to see how that helps...
My only problem is that when i go to my highest power setting on my yaesu-2800, I get a loud humming sound when i key down on the mic. Another friend on 2 meter told me that this was most likely because the power supply that I am using for the ham radio was not putting out enough amps and this was causing the hum sound. I believe the power supply was putting out around 12.5 amps when i was keying down on full power...
He suggested using a power supply out of an old computer to run the 2 meter radio. I just happen to have an old gateway computer that I bought around 2004 that I am not using. Would it be possible to use the power supply out of my gateway computer to run the yaesu??? And use the pyramid power supply that I am already using for the 2950 to talk on 11 meters??? I figure if that is the case then I can just use both power supplys and that way i could have both my 2 meter and 11 meter going if I wanted...
Technical question for ham and 11 meter...

" He suggested using a power supply out of an old computer to run the 2 meter radio. "
It has been done however go get a 25=35 amp supply and your all set ....
I use a 35 amp to power my 2 meter FM radio and my FT-840. -
How much of a power supply do you need to run a 65-75 watt mobile radio? Would a 12 amp not be enough? Just asking....

How hard would it be to use a power supply from the computer? I'm assuming when you take it out, you can still plug it into the wall and then you connect the radio to it? I'm somewhat on a budget so if this works, then it would be awesome... Any tips would be appreciated.

You CAN do just that remember most supplys have 12 and 5 volt outputs .... As for how well regulated it should be good enough....
They use a standard plug to go to 120volts yes you can remove it and plug it into the wall then tap into the 20-24 pin white connector and get your 12 volts the rating should be on the power supply as to how much current at 12 volts it will put out ... -
I'm looking at my power supply and it says that it is a 25 amp power supply so how many amps do i need to run this yaesu? It looks like it's pulling 12 or 14 amps when i key up on full power but I don't know where the hum is coming from if this is supplying enough power????
I was told when I got this power supply, you could run both, the 2 meter and the 2950 together as long as you didn't key them both up at the same time, then you shouldn't have a problem? LOL I just want things to work right!! Haha
Any suggestions? -
CHECK THE OUTPUT VOLTAGE AND MAKE SHURE IT IS 11.5 - 14 volts ! -
I beleive it was when I keyed up. Sometimes the hum sound is noticeable and sometimes it isn't. Who knows... I'm still learning on this stuff.
Just to make sure, can I hook the 2950 up to the same power supply and have it powering both radios as long as I don't try to talk on both of them at the same time? -
