I'm in Montreal and turning 18 in a couple months. What kinda trucking job can I get? I'm guessing hauling a 53' trailer is out of the question, but the Qc gov't does offer a special program for 17-18 year olds here to get a class 1 license. Doubt I would get hired anyway due to insurance. Could I drive a smaller truck locally around montreal or intercity? Or am I out of luck and better off to wait till I'm 21? Can someone tell me about the insurance situation for under-21's? My dad asked his company and even they couldn't tell him... I guess they never get young guys asking for a job.

Get into the Military. Pass your training there. multi million dollar requirement ranging from anything in your Nation's Inventory. Don't worry about what you don't know, they will learn you.

Is that what I have to do to get a job at my age? I'd rather just apply the normal way.

    My real deal recomadation young man is;

Get at least a two year degree in the mean time while you wait on your 21 years of age to show up.

I got into trucking @ 20 years age, but from the time of high school til then are basically unaccounted for. It would of been much nicer' to have a little degree stashed away. Wether that be for back up or what. A 2 year general education degree holds its weight, then you can get into trucking. And say if at the age of 35 you save up enough to finish your bachelors by paying cash, your already 2 years ahead.

Think career not JOB my friend. Trucking is great a career no doubt but you got some time now to work a degree in

    Good luck to ya ok

Good advice no doubt. I'm in school now and not liking it too much and wasting my dad's money. I'd much rather be out on the road MAKING money. Sure the hours are unaccounted for, but experience is precious. How do I get a job? Food service?

Your best bet if you must rush into trucking is straight truck food service, paper disposal, trash disposal, class B Cdl type work. Don't waste your dads money. If he's willing to help- Get your degree and put it in your back pocket for later. [the older you get the less people will try to help you, fam or not]

Because check this out: class B experience really doesn't account for squat in tractor trailer world, especially if you plan on coming to the US to live.

You might make some money from your 18 to 21 years age, let's just say 22k usd a year til 21. That's 66k usd before taxes. A college education is worth about that much.

If you have a father willing and able to support your education then don't be sillly to pass that up over a temporary gain.

Trucking ain't going no where. Might as well make yourself more valuable with some college education while you study trucking and make your perfect entry and be ahead of the pack.

Then your education will be your fall back plan if dot trips and messes you up, or if you get in a wreck, you gotta proctect your cdl at all costs.

So you can start NOW to protect your cdl by getting the college education to fall back on.

Bite the bullet now, and make your moves. Dont mess your future up by trying to rush into some fly by night job.

UNLESS; your fam is really counting on you to make money now

Thanks for the advice. Can I start driving small trucks with a class 5 license? Or do I need to go to school for a class 3? As for the education thing, college will always be around, and when I need to go I'll be able to pay for it myself rather than leeching off my dad. Trucking on the other hand... I think there is a very real possibility of trucking as a career disappearing in the next 10-20 years.

Well in the US, there's class A, which is the top level, then B and so forth. Don't know about your class 3,4 etc

Class A in the US is only allowed for those 21 or older///// or for intrastate / pick up and deliver in the same state - 18 years old for that I believe

Just don't you think your mooching for going to school. If your passing with good grades then chances are your making your folks proud.

I thought the same as kid, but my pops was just honestly trying to prepare me for life. But I was to proud to take the advance. Remember That's what's fam is all about, being able to set the next generation up for a better future

Now if your 30-40 years old asking for a hand out then yeah your mooching.

Take advantage of gov't sponsored program. It's unique to the continent training 17&18 year olds but that just highlights how hard up the industry is for new recruits.
I hauled powder out of Boleil, Brownsburg and Boucherville for 10 years.

Sure I'd get a license to drive a tractor with a 53' trailer but would any company hire me? Would I even be insurable?
