I'm all for allowing 18 year olds to drive across state lines, I mean what is there to lose? All these rollovers and jackknifes are caused by drivers much older. Some of them won't be any more experienced. If there is adequate training, which has proven to be a problem in this industry, then what's the big deal? The country trains 18 year olds for combat if necessary. I don't see that much of difference between an 18 year old or 21 year old in terms of level of maturity. Not only that, people are worried about the wrong things. It ain't like there will be this large movement of 18 year olds trying to drive trucks anyway. It will probably be only a marginal number, as most will seek other paths of life at that age. Most will look towards trucking at an older age.

What I find funny is here, most are professional drivers, and most are in favor of it. On Facebook, everybody is screaming "end of the world"!

Let's give the younger drivers a shot at it. If it doesn't work out we can always dump them and go back to the way things were. We really don't have much to lose at this point.

When I went to trucking school we had an 18 year old kid in our class. He was a character. He looked like he was about 12 to 14 first of all. Lol when we got out on the field and started doing the drills. Driving the obstacle course and back in skills and things of this nature. Well, He was an instant Ace. Perfect on every drill, with every conceivable driving skill. He jumped out of the truck with a big grin on his face. showed everyone of us up. Perfect on every drill, with every conceivable driving skill. He jumped out of the truck with a big grin on his face. He showed everyone of us up. Lol Even the instructor, who had been the instructor for 25 years at the school said you might be one of my top five students of all time. But let’s see how you do with the book work etc. he was good at that too. But I wasn’t buying that somehow this kid just naturally was the most talented of all 52 of us. FINALLY, One day he was like “all right you guys I’m on my dad owns a huge farm and I’ve been driving tractor trailers all over his farm weaving in and out of tight spaces and backing in trucks since I was about nine years old.” Lol
Kid was pretty mature, aced the quizzes etc and ended up first in our class. Who knows if he would make a good OTR driver or not but that was his intention once he hit 21.
