Just as these guys have said...I have 18 and would never go with anything less. I do a fair amount of heavy work and some off road work. It is nice being able to split the low side when getting 150K rolling or trying to shift when off road in mud, etc. It is easier for me to go half a gear at a time when in these conditions and i believe it is alot easier on drivetrain...
I wouldnt hesitate to own a 10 speed if i never exceeded 80K and never got off blacktop...
18 gears. WTF Chuck?

All i have to say on this pull a big hill with a 10spd then an 18spd and tell me which one ya like i would not buy anything but an 18 or 13.
Michelangelo Thanks this. -
When I started driving I was trained on a Super 10. So basically, a 13 or 18 speed is like a nomal 10 speed (w/high and low gear range), but like a Super 10, where you split the gears, depending where the shifter is?

As AussieDave said, just because there is 18 gears, doesnt mean you have to use them everytime. When running light or on a downhill, drive it as a 9 speed or whatever conditions permit.
Most of the time i drive it as a 13 speed, but being able to split the low side is nice when i want it...
While on the subject of all these friggin gears, a question for the gear heads. Why doesnt Roadranger make a 20 speed transmission? By being able to use the "low gear" position on the high side? Seems like it would make a couple of extra ratios to use and for all the macho guys that need more gears yet, what a great selling feature?Last edited: May 22, 2010

The 18,13,and super 10 came out to match the sweet spot on early electronic engines.
I got my first super 10 in 92 or 93 in a international with a 60 series, but the super 10's soon fell out of favor with the fleet do to the vp of maintenance having to teach proper shifting after work every night.
His wife was not amused.
Personally I loved it.
With the jake you could roll though the gears in nothing flat going up hill.
Sadly they went back to the old regular 10spdsMichelangelo Thanks this. -
I have a 13 speed right now but when it comes time to replace it I'll get an 18 speed...It's nice to have more options when hauling heavy loads.

I currently have a Super 10. It's what came in my truck. As I contemplate a newer truck, I am TOTALLY DISREGARDING ANY truck that has a Super 10. I'll NEVER own another one. I HATE IT!! THe gear spacing totally sucks canal water. I've never had any problems with it, it just blows.
I am also an 18 speed fan. I'd rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them! It's easy enough to learn to skip the ones you don't need. I think an 18 speed is a very easy tranny to drive. ONce you get used to it, you'll miss having it later, unless your pulling really light on flat ground. I know I miss the 18.
I think it's FAR LESS work when pulling heavy to use the 18 speed than nursing things along in a 10 or 9 speed. Especially in the hills. Makes it so much easier for me. -
sounds like you blokes in the US are pretty much on par with use over here in OZ, nice to see we have simular thoughts on gear boxes, take care all

Im in agreement, I love 18 speeds.
The company I work for is equipped with 10's and 15's across the fleet, with a few 13's and 18's sprinkled in for variety.
With the hills we have here in BC, 10's are a complete bear, even with an 80K lb load.
With some of the loads we haul (usually no more than 63,000 KG) Even a 15 is too few in my opinion.
If somes good, mores better right?
