18 Wheeler stuck in Zion National Park tunnel

    Actually, if you Google the two routes, Kanab to Vegas via Fredonia and Colorado City is shown as 200 miles and time shown is 3 hours, 6 minutes.
    But doing it via Zion is shown as 202 miles, 3 hours and 32 minutes.

    So on the face of it, that isn't an unreasonable route. It is just that the reality of it is a wee bit different than on the paper, or screen!:biggrin_2559: And I still don't believe that ANY GPS would show that as the "preferred route" for any type of travel.

    Don, have you had the "wonderful" experience of nav go on the qualcomm or peoplenet systems. A driver will call it a gps. And yes it will route one through a national park, it will route you on county roads.. Not excusing the driver for being stupid, but that gps system is terrible and worse at routing than a car gps.

    This site has more drivers that never make mistakes when driving, and are very quick to hang everyone else.

    It is very plain to see that the driver is not at fault when the state adds the signs fter he entered the tunnel.

    Like the signs all around the park that state NO COMMERCIAL VEHICLES IN ZION NATIONAL PARK.

    You know they only put the signs up behind the truck. Besides most are written in a foreign language, Mormoniezeeee.

    LOL CRE is great! For a laugh and a shake of the head. Last summer we were working a bridge replacement over the weekend and as I was pulling away from dumping my load I see a tractor trailer coming up the road. Well here is the good part.... He passed no less than 2 portable electronic signs stating that US HWY 12 road work was being done and the road was closed from 8 pm on Friday to 6 am on Monday. Then there were the road closed signs that were posted before the barricades. Oh and then there were TWO barricades about a mile apart that he drove AROUND. You had to go in the dirt to go around them, we had to with the dump trucks.

    Long story short, this was US HWY 12 in the canyon just north of Townsend, MT and he had about a mile backwards before there was a place to turn around. Took him over an hour to back it up.

    Although we were only providing drivers for round the clock operations in the dump trucks here is what they were doing....

    Even if he could have gotten around the crane, the foot bridge would not hold him. They picked this beam up at 12 pm off the trailer.

    And this is what I say when I cam back at 8 am the next morning and apparently they finished grouting at 12 am.

    When we say the road is closed, we mean it.

    BTW, this was the first bridge we replaced, the one we were working on when CRE showed up was about 2 miles past this one.

    That is just insane! And companies actually spend good money on this system? What the hell are they thinking?

    They are thinking they shouldn't spend extra money for a separate trucking GPS system. The kicker is some companies will caution you NOT to use your own GPS system.

    I know from personal experience that the Qualcomm GPS system will route you through a truck restricted road through a national park (Yellowstone). The idea is you should use your head for more than a hat rack, break out the Rand McNally atlas, and do a little trip planning that includes finding out if your route is legal.

    I'd say in the summer I use the Qualcomm GPS route about 70% of the time, less so in the winter. One thing is the Qualcomm system will send you through small towns, stop lights, stop signs, railroad crossings, and school zones instead of an interstate if it will save half a mile. You can toss any time and fuel savings out the window on those minimum mileage routes.

    In the winter I'll find my own route to avoid the weather if I have an option.

    Use your noggin' for more than a hat rack.

    IMHO the problem isn't so much the idiocy of lack of proper trip planning. The problem is lack of horsepower.

    They get the system being told they can custom program the routes for their drivers, and then hit the wall of programming that would take, so it defaults to shortest route.

    Had a crude hauling company operating here in wyoming fall for nav go's line of bs.... after three trespassing tickets from the local sheriff, and the land owners, it was deleted from our peoplenet system. The route was programmed by the office in bakersfield CA... The lease road in was 5 miles farther, but the only road we were allowed on in that area.
