I love the trailers with SS on them. They ride so much better. Couple them with air ride on the trailer an it's smooth sailing. Not to mention the weight savings which is especially nice since I pull tankers.
The key to SS is get the open shoulder lugs. Not the smooth closed shoulder ones. I seen them on rhoel trucks I think. Terrible idea.
We got the open shoulder meatier lugs on our trucks and we have no problems. We go off road cause we deliver to farms a lot forced and fertilizer and whatnot. Haven't been stuck once. Drove all last winter with them and 0 problems.
Never had a flat or a blowout either. I check the pressure every morning cause there's only 10 tires to check so it takes me 3 minutes to check all 10. Get the screw on valve caps with the valve on them and it's just bang bang bang and your done. Makes life easy.

Another con if one a super single blows out, IM SCREWED. so u need to know when to replace. Check those tires daily. Use tire depth gauge to measure it.

Not much, they can haul the same weight as duels, they may ride a little smotther. They do better in deep snow, a little worse in light snow. They do better on ice. Better in deep mud, worse in light mud. higher MPG, lighter (about 100 pounds per duel set) You do loose redundancey in a blow out. Legaly your supposed to stop immediately when you blow duels or singles, so legaly there is no difference. If you have a blowout, its more expencive then a normal tire, but in many cased you have to replace both duels anyway. Blow outs are less likly with singles. Tires wont heat up as much as duals and wont have missmatch in air pressure since its one tire.

    What's the cost?
Roughly twice the cost of a single normal tire, same as a set of duals. Michilan X one line energy d's run around 900 bucks if your a member of the Mich advantage program. The normal line energy d's are 450ish a piece and you need 2. The main expense is buying new rims. Michilan does have some serous incentives though if you buy 4.

What's the benefit ? If any.
Better MPG...less side walls means less rolling resistance. Lighter...only one rim and one tire.

    What's the reason?

Reason for what? Long and the short of it.....if your only worry is redunancy and being able to limp when you have a blowout, duels are better. if you want better mpg, and a lighter truck, singles are better. handling and not getting stuck is similar on both. I would recomend running 120 psi in singles. they will wear better and get higher mpg. If you dont belive me, give mike becket from md alignment a call. he will explain all about proper tire psi.

If you're running a small trucking business, it's really about cutting your fuel costs these days. The fuel economy increase I get with wide singles is well worth any loss of "redundancy" because of not having that second tire in a set. The amount of money I save in fuel can certainly cover the cost of a road service call every year... or even two. Having said that, maintaining my tires is an easy thing; how hard is it to stick your tires every morning? I certainly don't loose any sleep over running wide singles.

120 psi is the way to go on wide singles...

It balances out. A single is a little less than twice the price of singles.

If u want to last it longer, out centramic wheel balancers. I have it on my t600 on every axle and tires last longer.

i use the true balance bead that go in the tire. They seem to work fine. Centramatic only protects against radial imbalance while trueballence beads protect against lateral as well.

I also just bought a tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) and now can see the temp and pressure of all my tires, insuring they stay nice and full. Also, if you buy them, regaurdless of axle, buy rims with 0 inch offset, not the common 2 inch offset.

I believe it is real simple to keep from blowing a tire, minus the blow outs caused by manufacturer, keep on top of the tire pressure. It has been proven many times that the main cause of a tire blow out is a weak sidewall, poorly manufactured re-tread cap and/or debris.. The sidewall will become weak if an owner does not keep the tire pressure adequate or, scrubs a curb. How many of you drivers check your tire pressure in all 18 or 10 wheels? It is part of the pre-trip, is it not. I have blown 3 tires in the almost 6 years I have been driving. Two were on a trailer and one on a tractor. All but one happened while driving for SNI The third happened the other day on the trailer I pull now and it was because of a weak side wall. Not sure if it was due to manufacturing or the Ring-Tread procedure that caused it. The tire pressure on my trailer is maintained by a valve system but I do check the pressure of all 10 tires on my tractor. Especially now that I will be paying for them..lol
