One of the brokers I haul for, has many stepdecks , cozads, specialized trailers etc..... every piece of equipment smaller in tire size are 16 ply “H”. Most have been flawless but you do get a few that blow “due” to heavy permitted loads or some yaywhoo hitting the curbs. My point is, there is nothing wrong Running those smaller tires as long as there are 16 ply. Just my experience.

Going North from here the potholes are a deal breaker for them, you seldom ever see 17.5 on a local trailer here for that reason.
We are allowed 15 foot without a permit too though.rank Thanks this. -
We have 2 trailers with 17.5. One has 215s, the other has 235s. The 215s will almost always blow before they wear out, keeping below 65mph seems to help. Doesn’t seem weight has much to do with it either, I’ve had them blow running empty. We always carry one mounted spare and another bare tire because we have blown 2 on a long haul, and 17.5s are almost impossible to find out on the road, and when you do they stick it to you.
We have yet to blow a 235, running 70mph. That trailer does have central air inflation, which I think also helps.
We are slowly switching all the 215s over to Continentals. I’ve been told they hold up the best on 17.5s, and we’ve had good luck so far. Time will tell I guess.
We need the low ride height the 17.5 offers or we wouldn’t run them. The 215 trailer has a 36” deck height, and the 235 trailer has a 37” deck height. -
Used to pull dropdeck vans with 17.5's. Going out with a low weight load. No issues with the 17.5's. But after we got where we could haul backhauls. Man I would scatter 2 or 3 on some trips.
Plus VA got to busting us over being over weight on them also. Funny the Company trucks did not have tire issues. But then again they could only run 68 MPH. Were I could run what I wanted to.
