If I remember, the V8 was supposed to be 325 hp. Mack has always been a tad optimistic in their power ratings, and the V8 didn't do much better than the 6, they sure sounded nice. The 300+, was supposed to be 315 hp, but I never believed that, as "shiny 290's" could leave me in the dust.

All I can say is they either underestimated or measured numbers different in the past or they are today.
Because every E9 500 Mack V8 I ever drove with a "rated" torque of 1660 would run away from these new 1850 and 2050 torque motors in the hills today.
Same with what I do now with the dump truck and pony at 140,000 pounds gross. I travel up and down 8, 10 and 12% hills here and my old E6 350 Mack ( at what? 1100 to 1200 lb-ft) would pull the same gear and do almost the same speed as my new DD15 505/1650.
The time difference on a 346 mile trip is less than 25 minutes quicker with new big power than the old 350 Mack.
Same with these new diesel pickups. I drive them. I have a hard time believing they have the claimed 900 lb-ft torque.Brettj3876 Thanks this. -
Midnight Blue metal flake or Blue Pearl
201 Thanks this. -
They've got the new pickups way tamed down from what they're capable of, they may have 400 horse and 900 torque but they don't let it use it. I've got an 05 two wheel drive cummins with a bully dog on it that will haul ### and take off faster than they ever intended a one ton dually to, needs an auxiliary overdrive yet though.

That's because a 300 plus isn't a maxidyne. It has the 1600-2100 power band. EM6-300L is a totally different animal. 300hp at 1750 and 1425 at 1020 rpm. If it didn't hold 1100-1200 all day on a pull it wasn't the maxi. Mack has always been slow off the line.
For what its worth the 290 is 855 cu vs 672. I'd put money on the 290 over the 300 mack especially if it had a 13 or 5X4. -
Yeah sure don't feel like it. I've been in a 2018 F550 pulling an iron trailer in the oilfield full of 2 inch iron, chixins, 4 inch adapters all heavy iron. We were somewhere around 34k and it pulled like a dog. Low rears 2000rpm at 60

Well your problem is the ford part of that, I don't like Fords much. I know a guy who just killed 2013 ford trying to pull 40k pounds of corn to town, he was trying to do 80 mph though. The cab chassis Fords are also detuned by about 100 horseBrettj3876 Thanks this.

Didn't know that. So a f250 with psd is a 100 more horse's. I can see why tho. Just looked it up 550 is 750tq and 935 for the 250-350-450.
I like their ecoboost line up tho -
All the chassis cab and medium duties are derated from their pickup truck counterparts that use the same engine. They do this due to the harder duty cycles and to meet the emissions in those cycles.
While I've never had much luck with the 6.0L Powerstroke or the new 6.7, I've driven all brands and used them to deliver travel trailers commercially and I can say Ford does have the best chassis for towing and hauling.
