On its maiden voyage the truck broke down. I made it to Oklahoma City and started to unstrap. Then noticed a trail of coolant down the street. After some investigating I found the heater core blew up and dumped about 6 gallons of coolant out before I could vice grip the hose closed. Out of the two hoses going to the heater core only one had a shutoff valve. I disconnected that hose then routed the hose from the water pump to that valve so I wouldn’t lose any more coolant. Ubered from where I was to an auto parts store to buy 6 gallons of antifreeze. I used 3 with 3 gallons of distilled water and was on my way back home. However now the truck had no heat.
After getting it home my mechanic said the thermostat was stuck and there was too much pressure in the coolant system which made the heater core blow. Ended up buying the heater core, new coolant cap, the two thermostats, and replaced the blower motor (it’s working but wasn’t spinning as freely as it should). Hopefully this coming Monday the truck has a better week.
Sorry about poor pics I took a few videos instead when it happened.

Bit late to say ... But hopefully you got 180 degree stats. I've found that the "new" part numbers which start to crack at 196ish run entirely too hot, and its hard to catch up with the heat when pulling a grade in the summer.

Does your 3 speed fan motor switch work properly. I have found that when the motor turns hard for some time it usually causes the switch to burn up. If you ease out the hvav control panel and look at the back of the switch you will probably see that the bakelite is partially melted. Replace the switch and the sort pigtail of wire harness. Be absolutely certain that you get the right switch for your truck.

What year did KW start using a smart wheel, I have a 96 W9L and a 99 T8, neither of which has the smart wheel, the T8 does have the daylight doors though.

Now I am confused, your first pic showed a smart wheel, but not the last one, did you delete it???
I am the type of guy that keeps a truck forever, unless it gets totalled, which knock on wood hasn't not happened so far.
I still have my int 9400 that I bought in 99, and at some point decided to buy a new one a few years ago. when the lonestars came out, I went to look at the first one the dealer got in in Amarillo and between the smart wheel, the one piece windshield and the plastic frontend, I decided I didn't need anything like that.
At the time I was running the Alcan hot and heavy, and replaced windshields several times a year, and I figured that smart wheel would eventually be a headache and a money pit,Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
What a nice Truck! Great thread. Gotta hand it to you, getting right with it. Good job, one of my favorite Trucks ever. Not many w/ Detroit’s out there either. Already a “rare “ Truck. 4 hrs on the floor work is very good. Impressive!!! Enjoy
Kshaw0960 Thanks this.
