Hi I'm in the market for my 1st truck and can get a great deal on either of the 2 I mentioned above. Are there any major differences between the 2?tjey look the same to me. The 97 has a Cat 3406e with under 400k on TOTAL on the whole truck. The 2000 has a Detroit over a million total but got an inframe, rebuilt tranny and clutch 165k ago. Both have 13 spds. Of course the 97 is $6,500 more but I think its worth it considering the milage.Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'd definitely go for the 97 Cat with half the miles over an 00 Detroit. Even if it was $15k more.

That old kitty will pull better than the Detroit. Check the serial number though that may have a 5ek in it. If it does they had problems with the cranks breaking due to the damper. Might want to invest in a new one just to be on eht safe side. I have a 2000 different motor but she's got 1.4 on her and still runs like a top. That old lion still screams when I need her to and I love that truck.

I'm pretty sure he means replace the harmonic damper, on the front of the crank. Usually around $400-$500.

Talk to Mr Haney about the damper. I don't have the message he sent me about a damper on a 5ek but he recommended one when I was looking at a tractor with a 5ek in it.

I owned a '98 with Detroit and now have an '03 with a C-15 6nz... I liked the dash layout better on the 98 and the '98 didn't have any rattles . I bought the 2003 and was disappointed in the rattling and buzzing in the interior. I think they used thinner plastic in the '03 dash. I think with a/c on , the ducts contract and then can vibrate inside vents. I wedged some rubber between duct and vent. Its not bolted together . One just slides into the other. This could be one more reason to take the '97. Check out the dash layout. The controls are mostly up high on the center of the dash where u can see and easily reach them on the '97. But there is a vent in front of the steering wheel that will freeze your fingers. Also I much preferred the older style tilt steering and door mounted arm rests. The Detroit was smoother but the Cat has moe torque. Both pulled good and get 6- 6.5 mpg. The Detroit probably has more potential for better fuel economy. I miss my 1998. The '03 is fancy , but I liked the old one better in the details. But the '03 has the more impressive look. Good luck. I think I would go for the '97.
