I don’t know about you guys, but the last couple years, I literally have to finish every job where I bring my truck to a mechanic or have the repair re-done.

Will not go in gear and when it does it may work for a while then just stops. -
Problem is they're just so rare that not many folks have actually seen one. Most truckers I know would pass on buying a perfectly good truck solely because of a Meritor transmission.

Really appreciate you guys helping me to understand the mechanics and procedure to fix it. Thank you!77fib77, Opendeckin and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Most of the Rockwell’s are synchronized that is why floating them is more difficult. The old 16 and 20 speed married boxes in the 1960’s were very strange animals with lots of quirks.

At least the 1/2” gaps right. Next question is why is the linkage off? Did he adjust it? Make sure it’s not sloppy. The ball joint swivel wears out. Also check the cab to frame bushings in the front corners of the cab. They deteriorate and will cause too much free play. due to the cab being closer to the frame. Also if deteriorated bad enough that bottom bolt/washer has a visible gap, the cab will jump up off the frame when you hit a big bump and snap the shift arm in half. Broke mine twice. Been through all that with my 2000 Freightliner. Had me scratching my head. Finally figured it out, when after welding it real good, hit a huge pothole, The fine thread adjuster on the top part of linkage near firewall stripped out, Had no clutch at all. Shop said I needed a new clutch. I finally figured it out. Had to re adjust the linkage. The linkage only work’s correctly if the bushings are good. Nows the time to replace if necessary. Any time they’re replaced it will affect the length of the linkage, and change free play. So, check the little ball joint/tie rod looking linkage pivot at the shift arm on trans for slop. Replace if needed. Check cab bushings, replace if needed. Then adjust linkage at the top near firewall, to get the 1/8” gap at clutch fork that should equate to 1.5”-2” free play.

When I test drove the truck after the clutch replacement, I hit a small bump in the road and thought the doors almost exploded off the truck. So I checked cab mounts with a glashlight and mirror, but you can’t really see anything. I ended up just digging my fingers in there and you can feel the deteriorated rubber bushing.
Like you’re saying, I still may have to adjust the linkage, but the real issue has been the cab mounts. You saved me big time. Already got 2 cab mounts and 2 cab shocks, and going to install tomorrow. Test drive, and then possibly adjust the linkage.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to help me figure out this frustrating issue. Had you told me grinding/slipping clutch brake, to new clutch, to clutch linkage, to CAB MOUNTS, I probably would have lost my sanity. The trucking Brotherhood is strong. Thank you! Report on repair/test drive tomorrow.Oxbow, Rideandrepair, dosgatos and 1 other person Thank this.
